Summary
Taking chances is part of life, but when you bet your future against the odds, it's a high risk game. Kate Madison's stylish resale shop has been a big Soho success, supporting her and her four kids since her husband's untimely death. Now they are grown and ready to forge lives of their own. And they all choose to play against the odds, to their mother's dismay. Isabelle, a dedicated attorney, is in line to make partner at her Wall Street firm, when she falls for a client she represents in a criminal case. She tells herself she can make a life with him-but can she? Julie, a young designer, meets a man who seems too good to be true and falls under his spell. She marries him quickly, gives up her job, moves to LA to be at his side-but is all what it seems? Justin is a struggling writer who pushes for children with his partner before they're financially or emotionally ready. Will the strain on the relationship take too high a toll? And Willie, the youngest, a high tech expert, makes a choice that shocks them all, with a woman fifteen years older.. Kate-loving, supportive and outspoken-can't keep her children from playing against the odds. Can the odds be beaten? Not often-as her children have to learn for themselves. For Kate, the hardest lesson will be that she can't protect the children she loves from the choices they make-but can only love them as they make them.

Hard to understand at 1st with the British accent ! Hard lessons learned for a self centered immature young man whose fate required him to suddenly grow up quickly !

Prefer traditional relationship. One man one women.

I have enjoyed her books for over 40 years. However, this one was so predictable it made it hard to get excited about it. The narrator did a fine job with the characters. easy listen

It never really gets going and then it’s over, normal life made fancy by designer label references, I can’t honestly recommend it unless you really have nothing better to hear.

It makes you think about how little control you have in the choices of your adult kids who are independent and always learning and growing. And that you love them just how they are.

It was interesting.

This novel reads like a 1980’s family drama in dynasty or Dallas style but with far less intrigue. It’s extremely dated and shallow with its emphasis on designer labels. I was also not impressed in the 21st century with constant references to women wearing fur surely we have moved passed this particular atrocity of humankind. Like other listeners I also couldn’t finish it and agree the narrator was very monotone and he emphasised the ; ‘ she went there and then did that and then did this’ style of writing. Not recommended.

Another excellent book by Danielle Steel. So intriguing full of what life can really bring our way. The Narrator was incredibly talented who made listening to the book even more enjoyable.

Narrator was not good, sounded monotone through most of the book. Liked the book though

The narrator was not good, sounded like he was reading a recipe and I almost didn’t listen to the book. The book was ok but may have been better if not for the narrator.
