Unabridged Audiobook
Just adore this series. These books gives a glimpse into the lovely English country side
Wonderful book that took me away to a a beautiful place in a difficult time. Can't wait to read James Harriots next book.
What a great book , very well read by Christopher, really is a pleasure from start to finish Highly recommended
A lovely story but I had some problems with the audio. It is easy to picture Christopher Timothy in his TV role. A great insight into prewar veterinary medicine
Fantastic Book and very well written. Top Marks for this excellent production.
A beautiful book written by an empathetic person who loved what he did, understood people & had a delightful sense of humour. It's also a huge plus that it was read by Christopher Timothy who also played his part in the TV series. I listen to it every few months.
Interesting story, a 'light' listen. Didn't finish all 12 discs, but finished 9....
James Herriot tells delightful stories of the life of a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England. I grew up on a farm in NW Iowa that had cattle, pigs, horses, chickens, dogs and cats. Now a city girl, it was fun to hear the stories and reminisce of my childhood days. I loved the book !!
It was a great 12 hours. The reader really brought the story to life. But along with all the joy were a few sad parts. I guess dealing with life and death problems of animals it's bound to happen. Don't get me wrong, it's a 99% "Glad to be alive story" you'll remember and chuckle about. :-)
This book is more a collection of stories than anything else, however, each story will leave you smiling. This book always left me laughing and feeling refreshed
to the Yorkshire Dales where I can eat Yorkshire pudding, marry a young strong farmer and gaze over the rugged beauty of the Dales every morning over tea. classic writing, amazingly read.
I can't say enough good things about this book! The narrator was such an expert at using different voices, that I almost believed there were a number of narrators. The animal stories made me laugh and made me cry, and the people stories were just as touching as the animal stories. A real look into rural England in the 1930s, and the trials and travails of a country veterinarian. I can hardly wait for the sequel ("All Things Bright and Beautiful"). Highly recommended!
This is an easy-going, happy story, perfectly narrated.
Perfectly pleasant stories and reader, but for the love of Strunk & White, get an editor. The stories all sounded the same by disk 12 and I was predicting the drama with perfect accuracy by disk 42.
Excellent book. Very humerous especially as he is profiling people. I found this book to be more about people than animals, but the animals were interesting for their ability to set the scene in which the characters play their roles. Highly entertaining.
Great work of art. Unfortunately, I wasn't in to listening to the unabridged version. This work has been around for a very long time and has many lessons to teach. If you have the time, it is well worth the investment, keeping in mind that it is a novel.
Delightful vignettes but redundant. How many times was it necessary to describe Sigfried's lack of attention? The work would have been better were it shortened by one-third.
I love James Herriot's books. It is truly good, wholesome family reading. I cannot wait to hear the rest.
They were great reading the first time. They were equally great to lsiten to some years later.
I love this book. In fact, I went out and bought it. On several occassions I was laughing so hard that I could barely drive. If you have any love for animals, this is a must read.
I read James Herriot's books as a teenager and wanted to relive the memories. This was my first audio book rental and I can't recommend it highly enough. I laughed out loud while I listened, trapped in my car in Los Angeles rush hour traffic, and didn't want to get out when I reached my destination. Christopher Timothy's narration is delightful.
I read the book on paper as a pre-vet high school student, and have watched the BBC TV presentation. Revisiting it in audiobook form has been wonderful--Christopher Timothy played James Herriot in the TV program so he is already the voice of Mr. Herriot in my mind's ear.
Wonderful stories, wonderfully read. Well worth the time.
Beautifully written, touching, humorous--a true classic. The narration is a perfect complement.
All the James Herriot books are great! This one is a good one to start with. I have enjoyed most of his books. Easy to listen to.
What a wonderful story, wonderfully told and experienced. I look forward to reading or listening to his other stories.
Completely entertaining. It took me right out of the daily stresses of modern city life to a time and place that is delightfully comforting. He reminds you of the real pleasures in life and does it in a humorous style. I'm ready to rent the DVDs.
Of all the many books I've listen to, this one offers interest, excitment and lots of humor. I actually listen to a number of the CD's twice, which I never do.
Have read all of the James Herriot books. He is one of my favorite authors. The audio versions are even better. They are very well read. It brings all of the characters and animals to life. It is very easy listening and a great stress reliever after a hard day at work.
Wonderfully presented. Being familiar with both the books and the t.v. series - I was surprised at how different this was from my memories of those. Less about being a vet and more about human relationships than I remember. Still - wonderfully presented and well done. A reminder of how much the world has changed too. Ends rather abruptly though.
What a great, feel good story! Every animal lover will love this one. I smiled all the way through.
