Summary
The Edgar® Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box delivers a thriller in Back of Beyond about a troubled cop trying to save his son from a killer in Yellowstone.

Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand. After years of bad behavior with his department, he's in no position to be investigating a homicide, but this man was a friend and Cody's determined to find his killer.

When clues found at the scene link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a multi-day wilderness horseback trip into the remote corners of Yellowstone National Park—a pack trip that includes his son Justin—Cody is desperate to get on their trail and stop the killer before the group heads into the wild. Among the tourists is fourteen-year-old Gracie Sullivan, an awkward but intelligent loner who begins to suspect that someone in their party is dangerous.

In a fatal cat and mouse game, where it becomes apparent the murderer is somehow aware of Cody's every move, Cody treks into the wilderness to stop a killer hell bent on ruining the only thing in his life he cares about.

C. J. Box's Back of Beyond is a Kirkus Reviews Best of 2011 Mysteries title.

I was excited to find this since I have started watching Big Sky on TV. It's very similar to the 3rd season of Big Sky starring Reba McIntyre so it really peaked my interest. While watching the Big Sky series, I discovered C.J. Box, the author. I had listened to a VIP free book, Nowhere to Run by the author and knew that I liked him plus he is associated with the great series, Big Sky, that I am loving. So glad I found C.J. Box and highly recommend his books!

I only regret not coming across C.J. Box earlier than this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in the Hoyt and Dewell series, as well as the Pickett series. I had missed this one, until recently. It was a great listen that left me anxious to restart each time I took a break.

How can this author write in such a way you cringe waiting for the other shoe to fall see such lovely county and ordinary people then cloud your detective skills and have a hero with so many character flaws in such twisted word painted pictures WOW what a book

I couldn't stop listening. Many twists and turns in the plot. Although the main character was hard to like, I feel he represents many "real-life" people so he is an ordinary person.

I thought that is was an excellent book. Could not stop listening and was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out who did but also not wanting the book to end.

Quite a lot of cliche and silly decisions on the part of various characters, and the real action of the story is limited to the final discs. That said, it flowed right along and kept my interest. Not thrilling enough to be a "thriller" but still an adventure and a mystery.

The story was decent but I found I had a hard time listening to it as I did not like the main character. He was gruff, rude and seem to take advantage of his friends and others who tried to help him out. If the author was trying to invoke sympathy for this character, he did not succeed.
