Summary
“A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one’s fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers.” — Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of Wool

Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.

Something is out there . . .

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?

Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

If you think you know the story after seeing the NETFLIX film- you MUST read the novel! Though there are similarities in both there are just as many events and changes to turn this novel into a separate yet equal read. The tone of the novel is more ominous than action. Mallory and her “people” walk you through a suspenseful journey into the unknown and the frightening. I was so glad I decided to pick this Audiobook! Hopefully you will enjoy both the movie and the novel equally. The Thai phrase: “Same Same but Different” certainly in applicable with BIRD BOX.

I thought this was a long drawn out boring book. the narrator was good the book was awful. if I could give it 0 stars I would. in my opinion which is my own dont bother and dont watch the movie its not better its awful also. I listened to the book hopefully thinking it had to make sense since the movie made none and I was wrong the book made no difference it just took longer and I fell asleep twice trying to listen again. I dont recommend this at all.

I read this book a few years ago, and I remember it being so good, I just had to finish it once I've started it.

If there was ever a story perfect for an audiobook, this is it. Don’t compare this to the movie, the book is much better.

Such an awesome read!! I loved the movie so I decided to read the book! I’m happy I did! You get a deep understanding of Malorie and her housemates. You feel Malorie’s anxiety and worry. I watched the movie again right after reading the book and found that the movie (as they usually do) pushed right through the storyline, cutting corners and rushing through the major points of the plot. If you’re himming and hawing over this book, take the jump and listen to it! You won’t be disappointed! I’m now onto the follow up book called ‘Malorie’!

I loved the book. I loved the movie. I loved the narrator. It is as the book is written from Sandra Bullock. As I saw in another comment: the book and the movie are same same, but different. The book has a different narrative flow than the movie. It kept me on the edge most of the times. Even the ending is edgy. I can't wait for the second book.

Finally a movie that was better then the book. Don’t get me wrong the story is original and amazing. I enjoyed every minute of it. My only criticism is there was not enough character development. I wanted to know more about these folks. All in all I recommend this novel.

Very interesting concept, I was intrigued the whole time. Narrator was great, but reading at a higher speed made her sound a bit distorted, but I blame that on the app and not the narration. Overall, a suspenseful story that kept me wanting to know more.

Story is OK, a good old survival horror, with a linear plot. I am writing this due to the narration. Cassandra Campbell is perfect. In my opinion, she is the reason this book keeps you on the edge, not the story itself. I will ask for people who read the paper version of this book for their thoughts; i believe that the audio version is much better.

I liked the story, pretty cool concept. I liked that the creatures were up for interpretation. I was totally drawn in to the story, and was never bored. I like the narrator too, I've listened to her before and she does a great job.

I have read many, many books and can honestly say I have never read one that was as intense as this one. There was never a moment that wasn't filled with suspense and worry. I hated it to end but since it had to I am going right away to find another book by this author. The narrator did an excellent job. I could always tell which time period The main character was in by the slight change in her voice. Excellent!

The idea is sort of original - a variation on the zombie apocalypse theme. Lots of scary parts. Overlong, I think.

The writer must have been killed by the creatures before she could explain what they were. That's the o ly possible explanation for this poor ending.

Creepy and compelling. I could feel my own world closing in as the story drew me in deeper.

Narrator was good in my opinion, but the highs and lows left me listening at top volume. This story is all about the journey and personal growth of the main character and not so much a destination. Also a lot of he said ... she said ... said the boy.

The narrator was flat and dull and the story was so slow moving. I struggled to get to the end. Skip it!!!

Very good- It was very suspenseful! Even though the narrator for every voice- you could easily distinguish who she was talking for.

In contrast to other listeners I enjoyed the readers voice, some of the characters kinda sounded like Ellen DeGeneres, however some characters had a lot of sass that wasn't captured very well. The book was really interesting and talking about the book with friends is really fun.

I enjoyed this one. Very different. The attic scene creeped me out!... I would have opened my eyes or had to remove them. The narrative needed different voices for each male character otherwise well done.

Wow! This novel was so terrifying I couldn't put it down until I finished listening to it in one night....the premise was something I had never read before. What if you couldn't open your eyes when you walked outside because you'd go insane if you saw the face of monsters who roamed the earth? Would you blind yourself to stay alive? Or could you learn to keep your eyes closed and blindfolded every second you were outside the safety of your home? Creepy beyond belief!
