Summary
Siblings Jonah and Nell Talbot used to be inseparable, but ever since Jonah suddenly blew town twelve years ago, they couldn’t be more distant. Now, in the wake of Jonah’s divorce, they embark on a cross-country road trip back to their hometown of Albuquerque, hoping to mend their broken relationship along the way. But when a strange accident befalls Nell at an abandoned industrial site somewhere in the Nevada desert, she begins experiencing ghastly visions and exhibiting terrifying, otherworldly symptoms. As their journey through the desolate American Southwest reveals the grotesque change happening within his sister, one thing becomes clear to Jonah: It’s not only Nell in there anymore. Pursued by a mysterious stranger who knows far more about Nell’s worsening condition than they let on, the siblings race to find a way to help Nell and escape the desert before they’re met with a violent, bloody end. But there are far worse things lurking in the desert ahead…some of them just beneath the skin.

What everyone has been saying about this book is right. A whirlwind of chaos, blood, guts both literal figuratively, and emotion. The narrators definitely bring the book to life. Worth the listen!

Tried to get through the beginning of this book but it was soooooo stupid! The description sounded interesting and maybe it gets better, but the 2 main characters were so unlikable I couldn’t take it anymore. I guess I’ll never know.

Narration was rather good, but the actual story was a little dragged out and repetitive. Definitely not a book I would normally read - and given the words used I can’t imagine it would be a captivating read, but as an audiobook with the different narrators worked rather well.

I quite enjoyed this book, a bit out of my usual wheelhouse but enjoyable all the same

I thought the story started so strong and mysterious! But it pretty quickly morphed into feeling too repetitive and on an endless track of no resolve. I really wanted to like it! But when it was over, I was left wanting more answers and explanation for the things that unfolded - it felt there was lost of opportunity to lean into the mystery and let things come full-circle by the end, but it just never happened. I liked the female narrators but not the male ones as much. I think they didn’t read with the amount of emotion that they could have.

Mixed thoughts on this book. The writing was such that I found myself “rooting” for different characters at different times, and that’s what kept me listening. Nell was the most unlikable character for me. The supernatural parts were okay. The fights were too unbelievable.
