ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Public Library, Library Journal

Long ago, Nathan lived in a house in the country with his abusive father—and has never told his family what happened there.

Long ago, Maddie was a little girl making dolls in her bedroom when she saw something she shouldn’t have—and is trying to remember that lost trauma by making haunting sculptures.

Long ago, something sinister, something hungry, walked in the tunnels and the mountains and the coal mines of their hometown in rural Pennsylvania.

Now, Nate and Maddie Graves are married, and they have moved back to their hometown with their son, Oliver.

And now what happened long ago is happening again . . . and it is happening to Oliver. He meets a strange boy who becomes his best friend, a boy with secrets of his own and a taste for dark magic.

This dark magic puts them at the heart of a battle of good versus evil and a fight for the soul of the family—and perhaps for all of the world. But the Graves family has a secret weapon in this battle: their love for one another.

I couldn’t get into this book. I was really excited for the release but it’s boring. I kept listening to almost 50% and had to give up.

This book had two narrators and they were both fantastic! They really brought the characters to life. I loved the story, and I can't wait to listen to more from Chuck Wendig :)

An original tale that keeps you guessing. The despair and ugliness is palpable and at times I had to turn it off to see the goodness in the real world. Graphic evil acts and suspense.

The most puzzling, boring, rambling 16 hours of misery that I’ve read. Many times I couldn’t even remember what story was about. It’s as if the author strung together 99 mandatory essays from school. Just when I thought it was over, there would be a few more hours to go. You could fast forward 10 hours and never know

I really enjoyed this book. Characters and story were great with intriguing twist on good vs. evil theme. It was engaging enough to keep keep me listening to end but you get a sense the story's not over as it didn't wrap up nicely. Personally, I thought male narrator was excellent but female narrator was hard to listen to at points.
