Summary
High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the loss of his mother. He is angry and he is alone, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness, and as he takes refuge in the myths and fairytales so beloved of his dead mother he finds that the real world and the fantasy world have begun to meld. The Crooked Man has come, with his mocking smile and his enigmatic words: 'Welcome, your majesty. All hail the new king.' With echoes of Gregory Maguire's Wicked and C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, author John Connolly introduces us to a cast of not-quite-familiar characters. Like the seven socialist dwarfs who poison an uninvited (and unpleasant) princess and try to peg the crime on her stepmother. Or the Loups, the evil human-canine hybrids spawned long ago by the union of a wolf and a seductive girl in a red cloak. As war rages across Europe, David is violently propelled into a land that is both a construct of his imagination yet frighteningly real, a strange reflection of his own world composed of myths and stories, populated by wolves and worse-than-wolves, and ruled over by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a legendary book. The Book of Lost Things.

I enjoyed the story. felt like a mix between "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" and " The Neverending Story". The narrator was very good and made a good story great. I loved the ending!

I read this book a long time ago so it was nice to revisit it again. The narrator does a great job at bringing the story to life. Such a fun and adventurous tale!

I love what this book has to say about children and their broken spirits, how they bring their brokenness with them into adulthood, and how they find forgiveness and peace. It also has a great deal to say about the adults and other monsters - and all their lies, manipulations, deceits, and other falsehoods which cause it all. On the outset, what an incredible adventure. Behind it all, a softly spoken read directed at the heart of every broken child - no matter his or her age.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and narration. The story wasn't particularly original, but I still had a good time predicting the ending and just enjoying the tale. I liked the ending in particular because it balanced the darkness of reality with a "happily ever after" that was refreshing to me because the last few books I read had open-ended endings that left me with so many questions (this was the purpose for those books, but it's still nice to have a book fully wrapped up from time to time). Overall a great read and I recommend it!

Oh my gosh - I loved this book! It's "Neverwhere" meets "Grimm Fairy Tales"! I came to realize this was a YA Fiction (although it seems that has been debated!), but I was enjoying is so much, I didn't really care even though I am FAR from a YA. Trolls, knights, kings, evil huntresses, werewolves, woodsmen, dwarves, Snow White, evil sorceresses, Rumpelstiltskin, rabbit holes, Little Red Riding Hood, bargains with the devil, H.P Lovecraft inspired eldritch abominations, and probably oh so much more that I'm either forgetting or missed! Heroes and monsters, sometimes a single character is both at the same time, just like us humans on this side of the sunken garden. The narrator is superb! The very, very, very end had me in tears! Dark yet ultimately hopeful - I loved this tale!

A great story of a coming to age child, and how perception is reality. Creative and unique, I enjoy this book.

Very entertaining. Solid narration, nothing hokey or forced. The story is quite entertaining as the fairy tales unfold in their own unique way. Definitely worth a listen

This was an amazing piece of literature! Eloquently written, superbly narrated! One of the most draw you in and keep you guessing books I've read in a long time. No one should be disappointed in listening to this book!

I liked it. I liked the rewriting of the fairy tales and the growth of the character but it would have benefited from some tightening.

The story was okay... it didn't overly engage me and I didn't really care about the protagonist until the very end.

Deceptively not a children’s story
