Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the first book of the Scholomance trilogy, the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic.

FINALIST FOR THE LODESTAR AWARD • “The dark school of magic I’ve been waiting for.”—Katherine Arden, author of the Winternight Trilogy

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Although I’m giving serious consideration to just one.

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a school bursting with magic like you’ve never seen before, and a heroine for the ages—a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

The magic of the Scholomance trilogy continues in The Last Graduate and The Golden Enclaves

“The can’t-miss fantasy of fall 2020, a brutal coming-of-power story steeped in the aesthetics of dark academia. . . . A Deadly Education will cement Naomi Novik’s place as one of the greatest and most versatile fantasy writers of our time.”—BookPage (starred review)

“A must-read . . . Novik puts a refreshingly dark, adult spin on the magical boarding school. . . . Readers will delight in the push-and-pull of El and Orion’s relationship, the fantastically detailed world, the clever magic system, and the matter-of-fact diversity of the student body.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I really enjoyed this book, while it did take me a time to settle in one character talking, thinking, and being in every scene, after a couple of hours I got into it. I guess I was looking for more of the Temeraire type writing on this on. learning something new every day, primarily that I can like another style narrating. bring on the next book

This is a fantastic book, the story keeps you engaged the entire way. The beginning is a bit slow (first four chapters) mostly because your learning a lot about the setting, monsters, and other students from the main character. The narration is equally fantastic, she doesn't a great job at distinguishing between everyone's voices and attitudes. Overall a 5 star read, and I'm definitely looking forward to book 2 coming out in 2021!

What an awesome book. I aboslutely lvoed 'Uprooted' by Naomi Novik, and was eager to see her take on the 'School of Magic' subgenre. She takes something that's become pretty familiar and really brings it up to the next level. She's created a fully fleshed out and fascinating world. The use of magic is very unique, and the setting itself is wonderfully realized. Believable and likable characteers. It's a great read that's fun, gripping, and always engaging. Special note on an excellent narration which really immerses you in the world. Great start to a series!

I love this heroine. She's so natural in the way her emotions are depicted. The story line is amazing, filled with drama and suspense. I can't wait for the next book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Novik is really excellent at world-building and character development. By the end of this book, I felt like I knew the characters and I can't wait to see how their stories unfold. And that last line! When is the next book going to be released?

Loved the book. Great character development. I did not realize it was not a romance or that the romance was very minimal.

4 stars because I feel like this is the weakest book of the trilogy, but it did totally hook me. Def worth listening to all 3, and if you dont start with this one you will be lost in the next two. 4 stars for the narrator because for the back half of the book it sounds like she’s reading it for the first time, but the narration gets better in the subsequent books too!

Great book, highly recommend!

The only reason I gave the book 4 stars is I wished it would have been made clear this books target audience was the teenage market. it was well crafted, competently authored and the characters were instantly recognizable. I found the lead character likeable as she struggled to find a way to fit into the world. The way the author focused on the unspoken internal dialogue was pretty neat example of how the unconventional teen struggles to fit in to the conventional class hierarchy.

Just finished and wanting more. Loved it!!!! Refreshing and I loved the characters.

Profile Avatar Rosearisen Oct 2020

Naomi Novik hits it out of the park again. Harry Potter meets Hunger Games, but the main character has a personality. If you like action, magic, world building, recognition of systems of privilege, and snark this’ll do it for you.
