Summary
Patricia Cornwell delivers the newest engrossing thriller in her high-stakes series starring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Depraved Heart: “Void of social duty and fatally bent on mischief.”

—Mayes v. People, 806 III. 306 (1883)

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages and seems to be from her computer genius niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she begins to learn frightening secrets about her niece, whom she has loved and raised like a daughter. That film clip and then others sent soon after raise dangerous legal implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, worried, and not knowing where to turn. She doesn’t know whom she can tell—not her FBI husband Benton Wesley or her investigative partner Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.

In this new novel, Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on an intensely psychological odyssey that includes the mysterious death of a Hollywood mogul’s daughter, aircraft wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpetta’s entire world and everyone she loves. The diabolical presence behind what unfolds seems obvious—but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they raid Lucy’s estate and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell will captivate readers with the shocking twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail that she is famous for, proving yet again why she’s the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer.

Interesting story but way too long. Ending was a bit scrambled.

Ok. The story and concept were really good. The only thing I would’ve changed would be too much description and detail. Some parts got way too much into the way she was feeling. Had to fast forward through some of that. Was too much. But her plot was amazing

I found this Scarpetta book too long and drawn out, it concluded in a hap hazzatd fashion with the case taking second place to Scarpetta's fixation on her niece

I'm not too sure why this one grated on my nerves: the narrator's tone of voice or all the anger in the story. It was pretty boring and way too much Lucy

I hate this book, I can't even continue listening to it. I have been reading the Kay Scarpetta novels since the beginning but they have gone off the rails. I'm into chapter 14 and NOTHING has happened. I don't usually give up on books but I can't do this one anymore.

I was not pleased with all the f.. Word use and the story was very slow . I usually love these books but this wasn't a favorite though it gave more background information about the characters.

Not her (Cornwell) best. The F___ word added absolutely NOTHING to this book! I may try one more Cornwell but if the language is the same I'm done with her.

Lots of detail and character development. I was hoping for a finite resolution to this storyline.

Somewhat disappointed I am sure it is well researched but I felt I wasted my time. Get over the character of Carrie and move on!

Well read, without too much dramatization. Good story. Will keep you listening until the end.

This book was so long and drawn out.. There were so many small details, many of which were repeated over and over to the point that it became annoying. I kept listening because I was waiting for the big twist; the big bang at the end, but there wasn't one. I was actually left dumbfounded at how lackluster the ending was. I'm sorry to say that it was a waste of 14 hours. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of all the research the author must have out into it.

The book promises more than it delivers. The narration made me feel like a two year old being read to.
