Summary
A "marvelous" (Economist) account of how the Christian Revolution forged the Western imagination. Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion-an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus-was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history. Today, the West remains utterly saturated by Christian assumptions. As Tom Holland demonstrates, our morals and ethics are not universal but are instead the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed. From Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, Dominion tells the story of how Christianity transformed the modern world.

Like reading a good encyclopedia, this is chock full of info. I learned a lot but kept in mind it’s written from one researched perspective. I selected it because recommended by my son, an avid reader of books on Christianity and who informed me Holland isn’t a believer. It must have been a big effort to write and publish.

An incredible book for anyone who wishes to know the influence Christianity has had, not just on Western culture, but on the world itself.

This was a great book. I am personally deeply interested in the history of the Christian Church but I think the appeal of Holland's momentous work is broader than church history. Holland ties the grand sweep of the Christian epoch, both East and West, into the development of the modern era- hence the title. The influence of Christendom on the whole world and especially the modern world is surprising even to someone used to thinking about its influence and reach.

Fantastic read. A history lesson that spans from the first century to present day. From Ignatious to Wokeism and all points in between. Homosexuality, heterosexuality and women’s rights, Tom Holland has done a great job of covering a wide array of information. I loved the book and will be listening to it at least one more time. Narration is in the Queens English and is well done but as an American listener, can seem slightly cumbersome at times. There are a few spots of foul language but not so much that it is untenable. If your interested in history and Christianity, I highly recommend this book. Well done.
