Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • A classic legal thriller—with a twist. • 'A suspenseful thriller mixed with powerful themes such as false incarceration, the death penalty and how the legal system shows prejudice.” —Associated Press

In the small Florida town of Seabrook, a young lawyer named Keith Russo was shot dead at his desk as he worked late one night. The killer left no clues. There were no witnesses, no one with a motive. But the police soon came to suspect Quincy Miller, a young Black man who was once a client of Russo’s.

Quincy was tried, convicted, and sent to prison for life. For twenty-two years he languished in prison, maintaining his innocence. But no one was listening. He had no lawyer, no advocate on the outside. In desperation, he writes a letter to Guardian Ministries, a small nonprofit run by Cullen Post, a lawyer who is also an Episcopal minister.

Guardian accepts only a few innocence cases at a time. Cullen Post travels the country fighting wrongful convictions and taking on clients forgotten by the system. With Quincy Miller, though, he gets far more than he bargained for. Powerful, ruthless people murdered Keith Russo, and they do not want Quincy Miller exonerated.

They killed one lawyer twenty-two years ago, and they will kill another without a second thought.

Another astounding Grisham. Another incredible narration by Michael Beck. He is, by far my favourite narrator of any book, of any time, that I have ever listened to. I was so captivated by the characters in this book, that I cried at the end (no spoilers as to why). I hope, that Mr. Grisham continues to bring back the Guardians and their fight for innocence. We all know there are (sadly) hundreds of innocence cases to draw from.

The book doesn't scream excitement but does keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. It causes the most honest warmonger to think twice about death penalty. The narrator does a great job with the character voices. Makes the statement "a man of a thousand voices" a fact.

This book was great from the start. The narrator was phenomenal and made the words come alive. I have a new appreciation for the work done by those working to get innocent people out of prison. I loved every minute listening to this, thank you.

Great Read/Listen. I highly recommend. My husband is not a reader but we did a road trip to see our son (not flying during pandemic) and I decided on this audio book. We were both hooked from the get go! Love the story and all the characters! Mr. Becks narration was perfect! Would be great to hear from Post, Frankie, Maisy,

John Grisham never fails to tell a great story. This kept me interested the whole way. Thank you, Mr Grisham, for not relying on vulgarity and perverse sexual situations as an author. You’re a great example for other writers.

This was a very good book on a controversial topic of issues with the justice system. Narration was clear and i appreciates the narrator using various voice inflections to relate the story.

Great story telling! My favorite part was Mr. Grisham’s description of the “haunted house”. I was on the edge of my seat, (while driving). I gasped and laughed simultaneously. I arrived safely at my destination and lived to tell about it. Kindness. Mystery. Hilarity. Hopelessness and hope.

LOVE LOVE LOVE - I must admit after the first few John Grisham novels - they all started to be the same but this book has changed my mind and made me a HUGE John Grisham fan again! The character were well developed the various plot lines were not confusing and I hated to see it end! The Narrator of this book is great - the same narrator as the Reckoning - Live his work and will search title based n his narration in the future

I love John Grisham’s books. The background was interesting and well described. The story was important and paralleled true characters. Kept my interest from start to finish.

Enjoyed it a lot! The many different characters required diligence on a long Christmas car trip. The narrator had a lot of Southern dialects whach added to the listening pleasure.

The book was typical Grisham, which I always enjoy. The biggest problem was when I got to track 48 out of 52, it started quitting after about every 30 seconds or so. I would have to pull out my phone and restart it. It would usually repeat about 10 seconds of what I'd already heard, play another 30 seconds and then quit again. Very frustrating, but I was too close to the end to quit. This was only the second book I've listened to from this company and I bought a one year membership, so I hope this isn't typical.

Excellent book. I learned something new..again. Brillant pairing for John Grisham's books when Michael Beck is the reader. Can't wait for a new JG 2020 book.

Really good book, a little trouble following the different alleged criminals and charges, but ultimately I rated a 4 because I missed there being a love interest for the main character. There should have been some vein within the story that developed that. The challenge to be successful in that part of his life would have rounded out the other successes he had at the end. Great Narration!
