Summary
The record-breaking phenomenon from Elizabeth Kostova is a celebrated masterpiece that "refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family’s past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe—in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world.

“Part thriller, part history, part romance...Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous tale to tell.” —Baltimore Sun

My biggest problem with this book was how boring and cliche the long-anticipated Dracula finally appeared to be. Overall, the story is about adventures, not the depth of characters or original ideas, but even the adventures are as exciting as the title suggests. There are lots of repetitions and very little surprises. To a reader who is a fan of vampire stories, I do not recommend this one.

it took me 3 times of trying to read this book in print, and giving up halfway each time to finally get the audio book and commit to finishing it. and I have to say I'm so glad I did!!! I LOVE historical fiction and this book was such well written and and thought out. although this book and the main concept is fictions, the places that this book take the reader is educational and an experience for the mind and the imagination in all 5 scenes. I encourage those who got discouraged halfway through, to persevere to the end!!

Brilliant book! Both the concept and the writing are excellent. I was enthralled for the entire time that I listened to it. There's only one problem: I can't understand the ending, at all. I've listened to it several more times and I still don't understand what happened. Oh well, the book was so terrific; that slight letdown at the end can be forgiven.

Once you have started listening, it was almost impossible to stop. Wonderful plot twists and turns. Will get her next book.

I it really my kind of story, but was very well done and I found myself totally captivated. The narrators were excellent. The historical references were very interesting about regions not to familiar to me. A good read.

Loved this book brought a fresh new perspective to the timeless narrative of Dracula.

This is by far my favorite book and the first audio book I ever listened too. It does have a slow start but it's definitely worth the wait, it will keep you in the end of your seat. Those who gave by reviews must be poor taste, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I had read the book years ago and the story was ok. However, the narration of this was quite cartoon-ish and certainly took away any delights I may have found from reading it.

Boring.... I kept listening hoping there was going to be a dramatic twist, but it never came. Very predictable. Although, I liked each narrator individually, it was choppy when they switch back and forth in a conversation and messed with the flow of what little story there was. I would NOT recommend this book!

The story was ok, but a little hard to follow at times. Some of the bouncing around does not make sense. The characters are ok, but it was difficult to say who the main characters really are. There seems to be 2 or 3 stories colliding in this book and the result are the highlights of each story. You will probably like this book if you like vampire stories, but I didn't feel it was as full of suspense as I was led to believe.

I have loved this book for years and have listened to it 5x now. it is suspenspful thought provoking, historucally informed, imaginative, and the many voice actors and sound effects draw you into a world exitment. Its my personal favorite. Just a hint draculas voice is creepy and so perfect it will give you shivers. I highly reccamend this book!

The story was slow and stretched out and very unimpressive. I stopped listening after two CDs. I happened to be a native Slovenian and the author's descriptions of my homeland, which she failed to mention at the time were not Slovenia as a country, but rather another country, those descriptions were grossly inacurate. Perhaps Ms Kostova needs to do some more research prior to tackling a subject she is unfamiliar with.

I thought the story was disappointing - blah for a dracula/vampire story. In the future I'm going to stay away from abridged books - I'm not sure if this was one of the reasons I did not enjoy it. I was never able to get close to any of the characters, never felt any real empathy for any of them.

Maybe something is lost in this abridged version, but this audio book was more funny than anything else. If you are looking for spine tingling suspense, then make another selection. Hopefully for Dracula fans, The Historian is a better read, than listened to. The amateurish use of sound effects and music made this audio more of a halarious satire of the gothic horror genre, than a legitimate thriller. The producers seem to have a biting sense of humor.

This is the first book I've listened to where special sound effects where added to give a feeling of horror. In addition, there were several readers to provide voices for the characters which was also a nice touch. However, the story tended to drag on at times, and while it had its moments of excitement, many times I felt the strong desire to skip ahead because of the slowness of it all. Sometimes the special sound effects were over the top and caused me to laugh rather then be more afraid as intended. The ending was also anti-climatic as well, and could've been much more exciting. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5, but since I can't do that, it gets 3.

I thought this book was worth the listen. Many voices helped with the different characters. Chasing around the many countries seemed like Dracula meeting Leonardo, a bit of the Da Vinci code. Very enjoyable
