Summary
A charming, uplifting debut novel—full of humor and depth—that has taken readers around the world by surprise.

Everyone has a story to tell. But does Janice have the power to unlock her own?

She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her …

Cleaner Janice knows that it is in people’s stories that you really get to know them. From recently widowed Fiona and her son Adam to opera-singing Geordie, the quiet bus driver Euan, and the pretentious Mrs. “YeahYeahYeah” and her fox terrier, Decius, Janice has a unique insight into the community around her.

When Janice starts cleaning for Mrs. B—a shrewd and prickly woman in her nineties—she finally meets someone who wants to hear her story. But Janice is clear: she is the keeper of stories, she doesn’t have a story to tell. At least, not one she can share.

Mrs. B is no fool and knows there is more to Janice than meets the eye. What is she hiding? After all, doesn’t everyone have a story to tell?

This story really surprised me. I frankly wasn't expecting much. But from almost the first line it was enjoyable. And the story was full of twists and turned and very interesting characters. The author did a very good job of bringing each to life and giving them their place in the story. The ending both was and wasn't a surprise. You'll see.

Lovely story! Just what I needed between business books and long heavy literature. Like any good plot, it has murder, love, revenge, intrigue, but is very light hearted and a joy to listen to. If you need to feed your inner lit snob or depressed emo child give this one a miss. If you want something lighthearted and joyful, listen with pleasure.

I loved this book. It was sweet and gentle - without being “saccharine.” I loved Janet (Hope) and the cast of characters in her world. I particularly enjoyed the dog’s commentary. He was hilarious. The reader brought each character to life with realistic voices and personalities. I didn’t want it to end and highly recommend it!

Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Wish there wasn’t so many curse words but then I’m one of those people who feel that it’s the lazy way to get your point across. Despite that would definitely recommend!

Amazing story telling and the Narrator was superb! The narrator was able to use distinctive voices for each character that would enable you to really get a good picture in your minds eye of that character. The book left me feeling encouraged and empowered because the protagonist was able to find her inner “lioness”. Highly recommend!

I can’t believe that I almost gave up on this book in the first chapter. But, as I kept listening/reading, I discovered the rich tableaux of characters that made up Janice’s realm. Well written and marvelously narrated!

I purchased the audiobook from my VIP award and really didn't know what to expect. What I found was an entertaining story with interesting characters, a touching story and an unexpected ending. The narrator was wonderful as well.

This book resonated with me as I like to collect people’s stories too. The tales were diverse, interesting, entertaining and told in a few clever ways. The main character’s personal life story added intrigue as it was unraveled and coaxed out by the tricky, rosy Mrs. B who had her own feistiness to add into the mix. The narrator did a fine job. Enjoyed the listen and felt like an authentic eavesdropper while doing so.

The narration was stellar, sometimes hilariously done, and very very enjoyable to experience. I liked the book but there are glaring holes throughout, some of the plot is weak, or thrown together. Not all strings are tightened, and the ending while very nice has a sense of meh due to the way it’s presented. I cannot say the book was thoroughly enjoyable; it was not unenjoyable. I am glad I chose it over all

I thought the book was an easy listen, but the story dragged a little for me. Narrator wasn't my favorite, but she did a good enough job. Overall a book worth a VIP selection.

What a lovely, absorbing book! There wasn’t a moment I didn’t enjoy. I’d read anything written by Sally Page or narrated by Jessica Whitney. The characters are interesting and well developed and of course there’s Decius…what a special dog.
