Summary
The first installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit Netflix series.

In the middle years of the ninth century, the fierce Danes stormed onto British soil, hungry for spoils and conquest. Kingdom after kingdom fell to the ruthless invaders until but one realm remained. And suddenly the fate of all England—and the course of history—depended upon one man, one king.

From New York Times bestselling storyteller Bernard Cornwell comes a rousing epic adventure of courage, treachery, duty, devotion, majesty, love, and battle as seen through the eyes of a young warrior who straddled two worlds.

First book in another outstanding series by Bernard Cornwell. As always, the battle scenes are in depth and engaging. Great story that kept me entertained from beginning to end. Only downside is that it has a cliff hanger ending - I can hardly wait to get the sequel!

I loved this book. The character development, the plot, the way you can visualize what’s going on was amazing. The narration was wonderful. I normally don’t like narrators because they are kind of boring or they read too fast or too slow, but he did an amazing job. I’ve already started the second book.

I rarely love a book enough to write a review, but wow, where do I start? Meticulous historical research. Brilliant storytelling. Excellent character development. I'm listening to the recorded version and the narrator, Jonathan Keeble, is beyond awesome. Five stars for this title, hands down. I've already downloaded the second book in the series and I will probably be obsessively "reading" Bernard Cornwell for months.

This book is super unique and well paced. It kept me interested the entire time with a very likable character. The descriptions of battles were so captivating I can’t wait to listen to the other 12 books.

This was a great story and the narrator did a fantastic job capturing the personality of the characters. My only issue was that the story did not seem to end on the last CD. Maybe there is a sequal to follow?

I thought it was great. I watched the Series on Netflix or Amazon first and then read the book. (Backwards I know…) the book was much more detailed and provided and painted a better picture.

Givin the fact that I've listened to the whole series about 7 or 8 times and right at this moment I'm going for one more round I'll say it definitely a 10 out of 10 for me. Cheers, Mr. Cornwell.

One of the best narrators I've ever listened to, narrating one of the best historical fiction books ever, by one of the greatest authors. So yeah. I enjoyed it :)

I can't get enough of Bernard Cornwell. The story is bloody and the main character is not someone I would want living next door, but the detail is so precise and descriptive I felt like I was there. I'm only sorry that I could only get the abridged version.

While I loved the book, it seems that there is a disc missing. I cant believe that the story would end in the middle of a sentence. As always, Bernard Cornwell invokes with great realism the feeling of what it must have been like to be in the middle of combat in ancient times. His characters are human and personable. An excellent listen.

There's no doubt Bernard Cornwell is a superb storyteller. This is a historical novel about Britain in the 9th Century, when the Danes were invading. The hero, Uhtred, is divided in loylty between the two nations. I know little of this era and feel I learned a bit about it. Readers of the Sharpe series will enjoy this
