Unabridged Audiobook
I got through half this book before I gave up on it. It is dry and more dry with a coma-inducing effect. I listen to these books while driving, and had to stop listening to this one due to the fear of falling asleep at the wheel. In fairness, if you are a huge Little Women fan you might like this book. It also has some pretty vivid Civil War and slavery imagery in it. However, the few interesting parts of the story were not enough to get me through the book. Definitely not my cup of tea!
I am so glad for listening to this book. What I learned in history class about the civil war (in a yankee class) was that the north was good and driven by morality whereas the south bad and driven by financial concerns , stupidity and cruelty. Obviously this is a skewed picture driven by a prejudice special to the north , a kind of haughty scrupulousness. But I digress. Forget whether or not you like or don't like or haven't read little women as the determining factor for whether u will like this book. Because it emerges from scholarship, poetics, spiritual inspiration and insight into the state of literature, philosophy and politics of the time. This is rich and complex slice of one man' s experience of war. If you want insight into shattering impact war can have on a person read this and in this respect the book is also modern.
Took me awhile to get into the book, but I found it enjoyable none the less.
The author does a good job capturing the period style....the smug goodness of the characters is almost suffocating. The book isn't what I thought it would be, but had value nevertheless.
Being a lifelong fan of Little Women, I was so incredibly excited to find out this story even existed ~ and it lived up to my expectations in every way! The writer's style was as rich and melodious as was Louisa May Alcott's Little Women ~ and a natural partner to a favorite classic. Truly a must "read" for March-family fans!
Both harrowing and sometimes heartbreaking, March proves to be a action-packed, dutifully descriptive account of Louisa May Alcott's Mr. March during the Civil War. I was impressed by the well-researched attention to detail of a time when southern ex-slaves were under Union occupation. The narrator, Richard Easton, has the perfect voice - rich and dramatic - to tell the tale. A satisfying listen.
The author definitely has a wonderful command of the English language, and that in itself can be a reward. However I found that the story just didn't flow. It feels very disjointed and unsatisfying. I found myself eager to complete this one to get to my next selection. Maybe it's because I recently reread Cold Mountain. Difficult to top that for Civil War era storytelling.
"March" is a very well wriiten book. The author has a gift for utilizing rich language and this skill and the quality of this book will insure that this work will be enjoyed for years to come.
