The Medium

The book: nothing really ever happens except for about 3 interviews. Warning *there is mention of massive rape and, nothing is done about it except letting ‘a man’ (cuz a man must handle it all) handle it by spooking the rapist. The rest is interminable love-guck. It’s super sexist, obsessing on ‘manliness’ and how being manlike is so attractive. It’s unrealistic, with love obsession and wanting to spend all eternity together after 2 days (a very poor guide for young adults honestly) it basically shows everything I would not want my children to read, because the female character does nothing with herself except give all her time to thinking about wanting someone to love her and imagining what others think concerning her (super unhealthy). This book is a representation of the implicit issues of conditioning women and men to behave and think in a sexist manner. I’m really disappointed by so many female authors (C. J. Archer amongst them) perpetuating and willingly wallowing in female identity based exclusively on thinking about their appearance, how men perceive them, how they only ever think about their desire for a relationship. Seriously, humans are more complex than that. Narration: articulate, diverse. BUT there were these weird eternal pauses between sentences that completely broke the flow of the conversations, the actions everything. Like a full 1.5 second stop every 2 sentences (the narrator reading ahead to prepare? The editing that mistakenly programmed a delay between recordings?) it killed the book.
