Summary
From the beet fields of North Dakota to the wilderness campgrounds of California to an Amazon warehouse in Texas, people who once might have kicked back to enjoy their sunset years are hard at work. Underwater on mortgages or finding that Social Security comes up short, they're hitting the road in astonishing numbers, forming a new community of nomads: RV and van-dwelling migrant laborers, or 'workampers.'

Building on her groundbreaking Harper's cover story, 'The End of Retirement,' which brought attention to these formerly settled members of the middle class, Jessica Bruder follows one such RVer, Linda, between physically taxing seasonal jobs and reunions of her new van-dweller family, or 'vanily.' Bruder tells a compelling, eye-opening tale of both the economy's dark underbelly and the extraordinary resilience, creativity, and hope of these hardworking, quintessential Americans?many of them single women?who have traded rootedness for the dream of a better life.

This book helped me realize that you can make it. I am a senior and have not experienced what many in this authors’ travels revealed. I have since reading it looked up some of the businesses and appreciate the steps that have been taken to survive. Your book has help me see that all those RVs rolling by are not just having a good old time.

This book was EXCELLENT beginning to end and the narrator perfect for the part! Perhaps those who found it "boring" are very young, immature or so privileged that they can't emphasize with people who are struggling in America today. Made me even more determined NOT to shop Amazon!

Yes it is a slow book. It makes it real. It is an important look into that world. A great ending as well.

Shocking!! I never realized how many people are living like this! It is a downright disgrace to our nation that so many of our country’s long time contributors have to live in such poverty. Shame on our filthy rich government representatives for letting this happen!!

This book as boring I could not finish it. It would have made a good magazine article. Trying to prolong it into a book was painful.

If you want to listen to what sounds like a female computer reading you a story that has no real plot, I guess go for it.

Fascinating audiobook whether or not you want to do this lifestyle or not, but if you do, it is educational. The author did an amazing amount of research while immersing herself for long periods of time... It is sad that so many are somewhat forced into this lifestyle and struggling to get by when there is is common misconception including by myself that these people were on vacation.

Eye opening regarding wealth inequality and how the financial collapse devastated older workers. It’s wrong.
