“I can’t believe how good this book is.... It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect.... Wilson writes with such a light touch.... The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire.” —Taffy Brodesser-Akner, New York Times Book Review

Kevin Wilson’s best book yet—a poignant and often humorous novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable abilities.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: the twins catch fire when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her—urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With sharp humor and genuine warmth, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet—a most unique story of parental love.

The book is funny and easy for listening, but deep and touching

Loved this book . Creative and moving . I related to Lillian so much as a foster/ adopt mom who became a mom through an "unconventional" way and parenting kids who seem to go up in flames sometimes.

What a charming and unusual story. The narrator is perfect for the regional accent.

Funny and quirky. I was definitely entertained!

I loved this story. It was funny, charming, heart warming and had characters I appreciated. I sort of want to hang out with Lillian, Bessie and Roland by the pool for a day. Marin Ireland is the absolute best narrator and she makes the audiobook even better than reading it yourself. The book seemed to fly by and was done so quickly that I wasn’t ready for it to end. I want a sequel!!

great story

Witty and funny, the way Wilson conveys Lillian’s voice and character is seemingly perfect. Plenty of parts make you laugh, and plenty highlight the extraordinary. Perhaps the best facet of the story is the deeper meaning. A moving story about love and imperfections.

The more I think about this book the more annoyed I get. It had so much potential, such an amazing concept. But it’s like the author just gave up at the end. *spoiler* - the reason the kids catch on fire, genetics? Maybe? But the parent it came from gets 0 actual air time. Which is fine, it’s not about the fire- it’s about family and trauma and what not. But that gets 0 air time too. If you took out all the “he said” and “she replied”’s you have dozens more pages to flesh out the actual story and come up with a better ending than the main character going back to the only place in the world she hated. Unlimited options and she just gives up? After as much as she does to protect the kids? The kids hate their parents but she doesn’t? Frustrating book.

Easy read but with lots of meaning.

The story seemed simple at first but there were so many twists & turns built into it. It was funny, entertaining and the characters were well described. The narration was fantastic and made it very enjoyable to listen to.

Different kind of story line yet very interesting. Narrator rocked it from beginning to end!

Great story! Fantastic narrator! If I had read this story I would have rated it an 8 …but, the narrator makes this story a 10 for sure!

This story was so fun, heartbreaking, and moving. Everything I could have wanted from a quick read. The narrator made the characters come to life with her voice acting. Truly a great listen.

This book was great but what made it awesome was the narration. Marin Ireland captured each character’s distinct personality and attitudes with such deftness it was not just a book being read but wonderful acting. I am so glad I chose to listen to this book instead of reading it myself.

Quirky, different, fun book. Narration is fabulous.

Weird in the best way. Not the type of novel I would normally be disposed to read, but all of the great reviews and recommendations made me curious. Very fine narration. I was caught off-guard when the humour occasionally drifted into great tenderness.

I loved everything about the story, it’s sincere and blunt protagonist, the truly creative and original plot, the humanity and humor, so light and fun and still meaningful and important. I can’t wait for this author’s next book!

Such a great book. I loved the characters and the ending. I would highly recommend this book I enjoyed every page!

Profile Avatar Michael S. Feb 2020

Both laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, this is a disarmingly good story, wonderfully read by Marin Ireland. Her portrayals of the kids are especially funny and poignant.

Profile Avatar Sue C. Feb 2020

This is a truly entertaining book. The story is like nothing I've ever read and I loved these characters. Listening to the audio book made it even better because of the great accents. I recommend this to everyone.

Profile Avatar Jackie S. Jan 2020

Entertaining and surprisingly a good story. The narrator did a fantastic job personifying the characters.

Profile Avatar Judy M. Dec 2019

The narrator was wonderful. I could not put the book down. What a fast moving story about what it means to be a parent. I read that the author wrote the book In ten days amazing

Interesting. An easy read (listen). Foreshadowing was an easy sell. Everyone in this story was someone they were not, except the children.
