Summary
In an evocative and fast-paced adventure on the high seas and on a faraway island an orphan boy named Peter and his mysterious new friend, Molly, overcome bands of pirates and thieves in their quest to keep a fantastical secret safe and save the world from evil. Bestselling authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have turned back the clock and revealed a wonderful story that precedes J. M. Barrie’s beloved Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatchers is brimming with richly developed characters from the scary but somehow familiar Black Stache and the ferocious Mister Grin to the sweet but sophisticated Molly and the fearless Peter. Riveting adventure takes listeners on a journey from a harsh orphanage in old England to a treacherous sea in a decrepit old tub. Aboard the Never Land is a trunk that holds a magical substance with the power to change the fate of the world—just a sprinkle and wounds heal and just a dusting and people can fly.Towering seas and a violent storm are the backdrop for battles at sea. Bone-crushing waves eventually land our characters on Mollusk Island—where the action really heats up.

Fun. Light. Good young adult telling of the Pan story. Narration is obviously outstanding.

My 4th grader says it was really good. She really liked how the author incorporated the "star stuff" into the story. (It helped explain why Peter Pan never grew up.)

Jim Dale is an outstanding reader, and the book itself is clever and satisfying. I highly recommend it, especially for younger reader (age 10-12, perhaps), and for adults young at heart.

LOVED IT! Loved it! Loved it... and here's a secret... i have no kids. I am familiar with Dave Barry from his Miami Herald columns back in the day, but this book was a wonderful surprise. I sometimes would circle the block just to keep listening, unwilling to let the story go quiet. i was sad when it was finished because there would be no more of the narrator's wonderful voices and intonations to people the stage of my mind with colorful characters.

Oh, for heaven's sake - how hard is it to write a "prequel" to an existing classic? This would have been a fine story - except - at some point, you realize that you absolutely know everything that is going to happen because it is working backward from the original. Everything except feeding the clock to the crocodile is in here, from not aging to tinkerbell to the name of the island. The reading is by Jim Dale - who also does the Harry Potter novels - and it's the same voices. The mean pirate is Hagrid's voice, and that's just too weird.

This was a great story. It moved at a good pace, had a good amount of action and intrigue and painted a perfect picture of how Peter Pan came to be. I think that it probably isn't suitable for children under 10 as there tends to be a little more violence and this is not the Disney version of a story for kids. Can't wait to check out the next book.

I thought this a great book and with Jim Dale reading, it is outstanding for the adolescent reader. I always wanted to know where Peter Pan came from....great imagination! I hope that Barry continues to write books in this genre. The adventure is captivating and this book starts in the very first chapter. It left me wanting more and allowing my imagination to soar. I think this book should be a candidate for the Newberry Award and definitely on the states list of great current books(Bluebonnet,Texas).

At first I thought I had made a mistake and got a childrens' story...but after a few minutes, I was completely captivated! What a great story. It's the "Peter Pan" prequel and I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. Too violent for little children, but a great story for kids 10 and up, including adults! Loved it.

These are not your Disney cute and sugary characters. You'll recognize all the Peter Pan elements but this tale is much more robust and a bit darker. It feels more lifelike rather than cartoonish and I recommend it to an audience of at least 10 and above.

My son and I listened to the first CD while on a road trip but the book was too frightening for him. The hero is hit and beaten by an orphanage adult. Perhaps it would be better for older children.

So well written and Jim Dale does a fabulous job reading. (I did hear Fudge slip in, but otherwise, Molly does not sound like Hermione and Peter just a touch of Ron). The story is too scary for any child under the age of 12, unless you have one who likes to be scared and understands that some adults are cruel to children. As I listened, I anticipated the Peter Pan that I know and was surprised by the plot twists. Luckily, I have a long commute and was able to listen to the story quickly. I found myself wondering what would happen next and looking forward to another drive in the car...

I had my doubts that Dave Barry would be able to write an engaging narrative, although I enjoy his humor essays. Frankly, I ordered the book since I had heard so much about the narrator and had already read Harry Potter on paper. The narration is definitely fabulous, but the writing was excellent as well. Good characters, good suspense, enough humor to raise a chuckle but not the overpowering Barry style. I would recommend it to adults looking for a fairly light fantasy yarn, and kids who are getting into complex novels.

I preface my remarks with a statement that I have never read Peter Pan so I can't compare this book to the original. I LOVED this book! It is action packed and humorous. Jim Dale does a wonderful job bringing this book to life (though hearing Hagrid's voice coming from a villian was a little strange).

This story is a wonderful depiction of a Peter Pan type tale that captures your imagination along with the author's. It provides an excellent depiction of life before "Neverland". As always, Jim Dale brings this book to life. The use of different voices for each character brings you into the book naturally - as if you are sitting there among the scenes with the characters. Great audio!
