Summary
Lee Child says it’s “stunning… certain to be a book of the year.” Kathy Reichs calls it “extraordinary… a major achievement.”

Jeffery Deaver says that “fiction doesn’t get any better than this.” Gillian Flynn says of Karin Slaughter: “I’d follow her anywhere.” See for yourself what these #1 New York Times-bestselling authors are talking about.

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.

More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that’s cruelly ripped open when Claire’s husband is killed.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: What could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago … and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful novel from one of the finest writers working today.

Included with this gripping thriller is Karin Slaughter’s chilling short story “Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes.”

This is my first Karin Slaughter book. It was unnecessarily long, especially the second half, but I still really liked it. Cleverly written with tons of little twists and turns. It’s super graphic/violent, so don’t listen if that’s not you’re cup of tea.

This book was great! However it did start a little slow and was hard to keep track of all the characters at the beginning but I still really enjoyed it! Like other reviewers said, it’s definitely a little graphic but that didn’t really bother me

Great listen/read. Many parts left me speechless…. Definitely the one book that had me gasping, almost sick to my stomach but such a good book!!!!

Talented author but material far too graphic. Storyline was predicable and had me rolling my eyes over and over. I would have abandoned this book midway through when it started getting particularily dark but I can’t seem to leave a book unfinished. I don’t usually feel very strongly about a book but this one was far too gruesome/disturbing.

Once again, Will Trent did it again along with Sera, Amanda and Faith, well even Angie. I just love the characters in this series. Very unpredictable and dark but furry at the same time. I don't know how this author comes up with this kind of ideas but unless you are sensitive to some gruesome graphics, it is a great book. As a healthcare provider who works at acute hospitals, the graphics do not bother me.

This was an extremely well written book. Believable characters..I am a fan of murder mysteries..but, I will say the very graphic details in this book gave me nightmares. The book says "some things you just can't un-see". Well, you can't unhear them either. With all the current news regarding sex trafficking, I found this particularly disturbing.

Just when you think you knew your spouse, and everything falls apart, you find out who he truly is. Good story but crazy, do your hear me. Paul an OCD freak married Claire. He faked his death and that's when all things hidden came to the light. Finds out old Paul had a whole secret life. He went around abducting pretty women torturing them, killing them, having sex with them all while recording it. He had a huge client list to include the police, the mayor and overseas contacts, that paid huge amounts to do the same. Claire had no idea. Paul raped his sister lydia and was present when his father killed their other sister, Julia. The said thing is the cop who killed their sister, was the ome over the case, and knew all along. The betrayal and foolery done in this book. Chile this book, had me on edge till the end. Whew, Karin Slaughter this one's a winner. #book40of2019 #bookworm #whatsnext #highlyrecommended #pleaseread

Good read/ great listen.... at times redundant with the over exaggerated questions asked over and over again... a bit anti climatic with the ending but overall a good read.

It started out interesting but it wasted too much time on never ending conversations at crucial times. There were times when life and death should have propelled the characters into meaningful resolutions! I think it would have been better in a shorter version

Lengthy book that just got boring after awhile. I didn't finish it because it kind of drones on and on. I think the story could have been shortened by at least half. I felt information we already had was spoon fed to the reader over and over. Won't read another book from this author.

Loved listening to this! It was a bit disturbing, which was expected. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. The narrator was really good as well. It was a nice surprise to have the extra book about Julia at the end. My first Karin Slaughter book and I will be back for more!

Profile Avatar
Janet Batts

This was a great thriller. The narrator was very good, I am now listening to all her books. People need to read the summary and genre a little better before they download something. (Those who hated it)

Profile Avatar
Mary Sullivan

This is the most vile thing I've ever started listening to. I stopped a third of the way in, horrified that people were actually promoting this trash and giving it good ratings. I wish I could unhear the part I did listen to. It saddens me that the society I live in considers this to be entertainment. If you like excruciatingly graphic sexual violence, torture, and murder, well have at it. Negative stars.

Not enjoyable book. Torture of women disturbing and unnecessary. Author goes into too much detail and drags the story out. Painful.

Wow..... I hadn't read through the description very well before beginning this book so it was unexpected to say the least. But once it began there was no way I could stop listening. It felt as though I was on the edge of my seat listening the entire time. Although explicit and gory, I would recommend this to any thriller reader!

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar

Great pacing! This book will hook you. The psycho's antics hover very near the edge of gratuitous sensationalism but Ms. Erly's reading is so accomplished, the reader is compelled to keep going. All in all, a great book that shines a big light on an underacknowledged danger for women.

Profile Avatar
Veronica Roberson

Great read! Very detailed and suspenseful! Narrator does a wonderful job!

Profile Avatar
Toni Clayton

Love the book, stayed up late listening all night! However the narrator pronounces all "w" words with the sound of "wh" drives me crazy, it's just one of my pet peeves.

Profile Avatar

I loved this book, but I am careful about recommending it to my friends. The book is definitely not for everyone. It can be very disturbing at times, but once I got into the story I had to see it to the end. It was hard to stop listening. That said, after hearing this story I need something much lighter for my next audio book to balance the scale.

I loved this book - couldn't stop listening!! However.....it's VERY dark. The material is not for everyone - it's just brutal. I should mention that I loved the way she ended the book with the beginning of the original manuscript. Very creative. Hard to listen to knowing what's going to happen though....

Profile Avatar

This book was gripping and thought-provoking. A bit long at times, but I can understand that the author was trying to develop the characters fully. Yes, it was scary at times, but this "stuff" does happen. The book made me appreciate my life and children all the more.

Profile Avatar
Dori Augustine

Enjoyed how the story was spinned and told but when things got way too graphic, it actually got a little boring. Great narration.

Profile Avatar

The content of this story is vile. The story is so disturbing I can't understand what kind of a person could think this up then devote the time to write 20 hours worth of a story like this. And it's not like you hear some terrible, horrific scene and then the book takes you through the journey of solving the crime. No. This book is 20 hours of non-stop horrible scenes of torture and degradation of women told in detail. I have finally had to stop listening. What kind of person could think up such things and then devote an entire book to describing them? If you have the stomach for listening to endless scenes of women being raped tortured and killed over and over and over, let me also point out that the plot is so thin, the characters unbelievably stupid as they find themselves hunting down the bad guy and taking no measures to protect themselves when it's obvious they are walking right into a situation where they are in danger. It's as bad as the old horror films when the victims stupidly run right into the place they should not be. I'm no prude and have read many award-winning books where're story centers on one horrific scene and the fallout from it (e.g. The Kite Runner). This is not that book. It's a book for people with a fetish for this stuff. It's that really awful internet porn you know probably exists but you couldn't bear to even try to find it. It's 20 hours of terrible, unthinkable things happening to women over and over. The one point the book makes that is worth note - you can't un-know things. That's true. I now have horrific images in my mind that will never go away.

The title is a little misleading, as there is nothing "pretty" about this book. If you're looking for a dark and twisted storyline, this is the book for you. This is a horror/thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Some parts are extremely graphic and not for the faint of heart. All in all, I really enjoyed this read and will recommend to a friend.

Profile Avatar
Jill Clinger

This is the best book!!!! The story is scary and believable and suspense filled and really kept me listening. I had to sit in my car after I arrived at my destination because I just couldn't shut it off. The readers voice was perfect. Perfect touch of southern drawl just when needed. I have everyone I know downloading and either reading or listening to this book.

Although the book is suspenseful, people need to be aware that this is a very graphic and violent book. I am a 33 year old adult woman who had nightmares after listening to this book. I agree with another review I read here: I found myself questioning the author re the motives. Again: fast and suspenseful read, but be aware that this story line is frightening!

I also couldn't stop listening to this audiobook. That wasn't necessarily a good thing though. It wasn't as if the writer was profound and several of her sentences seemed trite. Instead, I found myself sucked in by the increasingly mortifying levels of hell the author kept summoning and then outdoing. I kept questioning if I would be better off as a human if I stopped listening, but the book got so utterly twisted that I needed to keep listening in hopes of experiencing some redemption and relief from the emotional shock. I'm not sure if the ending was enough of an antidote for the horrible places this book took me. I wasn't prepared for the images now burned in my brain. Hearing this book was like having my soul raped. If you're into that sort of thing, go for it! :)

this was a very difficult book to listen to. i found myself questioning the author's motives for even putting this content out in the world. perhaps it is important to be reminded of the horrors that can occur, but with such detail is questionable to me. Why?i do wish i had never read it, but once in, i tend to have to continue reading, if only for a little slave from a just ending or to understand better a larger purpose. mostly i believe this is a damaging text not necessary to indulge in.
