Summary
Fourth in the series of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries, Anne Perry's Resurrection Row explores the dark undercurrents that run through the lives of the idle rich in Victorian England. After a wonderful night at the theatre, Thomas and Charlotte find themselves confronted with a corpse in the driver's seat of a hansom cab. Even more shocking-it is the body of a peer of the realm who had been decently buried the week before. While the doctor insists Lord Fitzroy-Hammond died a natural death, the Pitts find the situation anything but natural. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Inspector Pitt begins his investigation within the proper channels while his intrepid wife Charlotte renews a tie from her past to get inside Lord Fitzroy-Hammond's world. But as they dig their way closer the truth, they find themselves in danger from forces who will do anything to keep it buried.

Extremely clever, quirky and macabre mystery for Inspector Pitt to solve this time, which had me guessing for the majority of the plot. The appearance, and reappearance of the same body that just won’t stay buried is almost funny… but that’s only the beginning of a conundrum that keeps growing and expanding until all the pieces fall into place. As usual, Anne Perry drops almost all the clues discreetly among the trivial and sometimes inane chitchat among the characters… I know those socially intense, backbiting soirees among the wealthy contain more than just random, petty comments but I still couldn’t figure out which comments would end up leading is to the darker truths. Loved the juxtaposition of the higher class dramas with the grim realities of the London impoverished as politics and alleviation of slum suffering is woven deftly into the plot. Vivid, smart and fun; loved this one!
