“Peace is a choice.” I think that this quote from part two perfectly encapsulates the story being told and the characters within it. In Convergence, we explore different planetary societies, the cultures, and values of characters who oppose each other and among all of it it still feels like a story that belongs within the Star Wars universe, despite taking place a long time before the main events that we’re so used to. I think the exploration of the different values and ideals of some of the main characters is what makes the story so interesting. The action is good. I was nervous that it wouldn’t be because I’ve read a few Star Wars novels where the action portions felt bland or unnecessary but Zoraída Cordova writes the action sequences so that they are exhilarating and entertaining. The romance, to me, was what I was truly nervous about. I’m not a big fan of romance within this universe unless it’s subtle or written with a certain flare. This is to say, I prefer character-driven stories and not romantic ones. The romance within this story is one that I enjoy very much. It’s not written as a second thought to the readers but as if it were second thought to the characters. I think that it was an incredibly smart move due to the fact that the characters have a lot going on (re: a war) and are getting to know each other as we get to know them. It’s cute and endearing and a highlight of the novel for me. To put it simply, Convergence was a great addition to the Star Wars universe and a good book overall. If you’re a fan of the found family trope the. This book is for you. It doesn’t come close to my personal favorite Star Wars books but it is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone looking for new Star Wars content. The only true problem that I have with Convergence is that at times it felt like it wasn’t on one straight path. It wasn’t completely all over the place but the story plot wasn’t as clear as I would have liked.
