I love the ending never expected it

Profile Avatar Lisa M Apr 2018

Interesting book. Narration seemed like a computer was reading Most of the time

Profile Avatar MaryLou C Oct 2017

Narration was awful. Book itself was good, but her voice was so monotone, it could put you to sleep.

Profile Avatar April M. Mar 2021

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great mystery that held my attention, the main character is witty and sometimes funny. It was a bit wordy at times but keep in mind the book was published in 1897. The narrator is not bad either. LibriVox is a volunteer based service. She isn’t getting paid and I appreciate her effort.

Worst narration ever. I had to turn it off after 10 minutes . Do not buy this book!

Profile Avatar Cynthia G Aug 2017

The book was very good.

Profile Avatar Liz N. Nov 2021

loved the book. great ending. I liked the narrator! some people mentioned they did not like her voice but I thought it was well done!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2020

Interesting involved mystery with a surprise ending. Narration was very poor however. Only stuck with the story despite mechanical narration because it was the only talking book available to me while on holiday.

Profile Avatar Gretchen Brewin Sep 2020

The plot was intriguing but regrettably the narrator was not- moving between stilted to teenage sing-song to strange timing and pitch I too often became distracted from the plot to narrator- never a good sign.

Profile Avatar Colleen N. Jan 2020

Awful narrator. Totally spoilt the enjoyment of this book. Could not get into the story owing to the awful, expressionless, monotone reader.

Profile Avatar Sherri Harvey Mar 2017

Story was pretty cool but the narration bored me half to death. I had to switch off and get a new book.

Profile Avatar Lady A Jan 2025

Oh I love this book a lot

Profile Avatar Melinda Mann Jan 2025

The book is an older mystery and takes awhile to unfold. It’s fascinating to listen to the importance of the clues like the clothing that people wore — buying new clothes was a big deal and a woman might be recognized in part based on her outfit. Also, social class plays a big part in this book. As the plot thickens, it becomes more interesting. I see a lot of criticism of Dawn Larson’s narration of the book but I came to like it. The next audiobook I listened to seem overly drama by comparison. This book is read like someone reading a book, not trying to act out the parts. Quite enjoyed it.

It was good. I really liked the writing. Kept having to remind myself this is from a different era.

Miss Butterworth is wakenen by a noise the the house next door. The people are on vacation. She calls the police. They find a woman dead on the floor with a cabinet on top of her. Who killed her. Great Book. It is full of twist and turns a page turned. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2023

a lot of twist and turn but really enjoyed it

Like the book. Had a surprising ending. Didn't care for narrator.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2023

Loved the book. A great mystery. And loved the narrator. Easy to listen to. Looking forward to more Anna Katherine Green books.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2023

Was of interest not finished yet!

Profile Avatar Rholley May 2023

I find it is difficult to listen to LibriVox recordings.

Profile Avatar Lada S. May 2023

One simply cannot listen to this. Is a computer reading the text, with all the pauses at very illogical moments? Could not bear more than a few minutes of this narration.

Profile Avatar Elizabeth H. May 2023

considering the narrator is not a professional I thought she did a great job. interesting story. enjoyable

Profile Avatar Ging Jan 2023

Nicely written.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2023

unexpected ending

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2022

I increased the narration speed for my own enjoyment . An enjoyable story - held my attention.

Profile Avatar ALISHA L. Oct 2022

The book was interesting but the narration was trash. OMG!

Profile Avatar Shelly R. Oct 2022

the narrator is so bad I can't even read this book

Profile Avatar Patricia B. Aug 2022

This book, although long, was exceptional! A major shift at the end! I highly recommend this book!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2022

I really enjoyed it,. I wish I could hear it again. How do I hear it again?

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2022

Loved this book. Easy to understand Great period piece.

Profile Avatar Susan H. Jun 2022

Different but I enjoyed it.

Profile Avatar Carol B. Jun 2022

I enjoy reading books where a clever woman outwits men who think they know it all. This was the case in „The Affair Next Door“. I enjoyed the sleuthing of the elderly lady who just happened to look out of her window one night and just couldn’t let go what she saw. I disagree with the criticism of many who did not like the narration. I had no trouble listening to her and grew to enjoy her narration.

Profile Avatar Rossy M. May 2022

I love this book. I enjoyed it! . I got very involved with all the mystery, trying to guess who the murdered was! I wasn’t expecting the ending. Narrator was good . She narrated it according to the time this book was written so I think she did a good job.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2022

ENJOYED THE BOOK, NARRATION WAS CONFUSING, DIDN'T ALWAYS KNOW WHO WAS SPEAKING.

Profile Avatar Anderson U. Feb 2022

the story is good. the narration is a bit slow.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2022

I loved this story! And it was narrated so well! So many twists and turns and a totally unexpected ending made for great listening. I will recommend this book to others for a good read or listening experience. I am 73 years old and appreciated the lively exchanges between the detective and the Woman next door!!

Profile Avatar Tamara R. Dec 2021

Long & very detailed in the language of the time, but I enjoyed it. Very clear narration, an excellent job considering the lengthy sentence structures!

Profile Avatar Jan H. Nov 2021

Narrator mispronounced many words. But I must remember she is a volunteer. Author’s grammar needs polishing. A decent storyline though.

Profile Avatar Kathrine K. Sep 2021

Ok story, ok narration

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2021

Enjoyed very much but it did drag on at times.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2021

I loved this story. The main character is quirky, full of herself and so fun to listen too. Story is good and has you guessing till the end. Best narration of all the books so far. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Profile Avatar Lharrison Jun 2021

Didn’t care too much for this book. Was tedious and no action or suspense. Skip this one

Profile Avatar Teylor M. May 2021

I got confused at times but the plot twists keep you guessing, as soon as you think you know who did it something else comes up to keep you interested

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2021

Too long but good end. Narration difficult to listen to at times but the language being old fashioned made it more difficult.

Profile Avatar Peace Frog May 2021

This title sounded good but, im sorry this narrator doesnt hold my attention at all. I cant follow along with her voice maybe its better for somebody else.

Profile Avatar TerriT Apr 2021

This book is read in 3rd party narration. However the narrator does not change her voice much as the characters are talking. I found this difficult to follow the story at times as it was hard to track conversations and who was speaking. From what I did get out of the book it was a interesting listen.

Profile Avatar Beverly S. Apr 2021

Great story. I sure was taken away by the ending. I never suspected the killer at all.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2021

Brilliant story

Profile Avatar Dave B. Mar 2021

story line was fine narration left me bored

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2021

Narrator could have been better

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2021

Very good story with good ending.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2021

Good storyline and well worth listening to. The narration isn't always the best to identify who is supposed to be speaking as there is no change in tone, but the voice speaking is clear and all the audio could be heard. A small inconvenience for a free download.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2020

Enjoyed this book

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2020

Enjoyed the twists and turns.

Profile Avatar MARY L. GAY Nov 2020

Somewhat difficult to follow.

Profile Avatar Sam B. Nov 2020

If the story itself hadn’t engaged my interest I never would have finished it; the narrator continued to stop at the most awkward times midsentence and mid thought ... it was enormously distracting and annoying

Profile Avatar Sheila Scott Oct 2020

Really enjoyed this story which had me hooked with the mystery of it despite the very monotonous tone of the reader which I had to get used to to follow the story. It was like a 19 century Poirot/Miss Marples type tale and I could really visualise the scenes from the excellent descriptive writing.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2020

I liked this story easy to listen to

Profile Avatar Catherine P. Sep 2020

I don’t usually post reviews but I feel impelled to do do with this book. I couldn’t get past more than 20 minutes into the book. The narrator was terrible starting with her accent. The narration was a detractor. Book over.

Profile Avatar Candice B. Sep 2020

unable to listen to this narration very mechanical like listening to a beginning reader

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2020

Great story. Worth listening to, not boring at all.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2020

Very good read and kept you involved.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2020

I thought I had it figured out. I thought I knew who did it. Then a surprise ending! Great plot, really strings you along.

Profile Avatar craig specht May 2020

this book was okay but it was sort of hard to get into, but all in all it was okay.

Profile Avatar Shirley W. Apr 2020

A very intriguing book.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2020

I liked the book alot even though it was written long ago. I liked the narrator and have tried to find other books she has read.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2019

I kept falling asleep and missed several parts including the ending. I think the story is a good one.

Profile Avatar Mary T. Oct 2019

Although the mystery was good with surprising twists, the women in the story were unfortunate products of the time in which the story was written. The author lived in the late 1800’s. One Woman falls into a fever due to the emotional trauma to which she has been subjected. Others are dithering idiots without sense or brains. the author does ramble on a bit. Fine to listen in the background while doing other things.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2019

Narrator was bland. Lost interest and didn’t even get through the second chapter.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2019

Very good book!

Profile Avatar Philippa Winsnes Mar 2017

I have to say that I thought the book was very good. There were some neat plot twists, although it would have been better if the end were even possible to have figured out on my own. There is no way a person could have solved the murder - no real clues to follow a trail. The period it was written about is well represented - interesting mannerisms, social norms, and phrases. The narrator was mediocre. Sorry, but a bit too monotone. At times this was calming and fit the ambiance and at times it was far too slow.

Profile Avatar Donna Pinkston Jul 2016

Very good listen Hard to understand the reader but it could be my device

Profile Avatar Maureen Kubasak Feb 2016

A very interesting mystery with many twists and turns. A great description of life in the those times.

Profile Avatar Berva Lorraine Hume Sep 2015

I enjoyed this book very much. It was interesting to hear and listen to a book from a very different time period. The narration was very appropriate for the time the book was written. The plot was well-crafted and intricately descriptive. I can see that it would not be for everyone's taste, but was historically a great example of the pace of life in the 1800's. The language was beautiful, cultured, and created lovely pictures I my head of the characters in the book. I greatly enjoyed this journey into the crime novels of the past.

Profile Avatar Brooke Day Apr 2015

Reader is terrible but book is good if you can stand the narration.

Profile Avatar Marney Lukanc Mar 2015

This was a very interesting book! The words used where so exquisite! I love how the story played out!

Profile Avatar Paris Perez Jan 2015

Book was boring and the reader was terrible. A complete waste if time.

Profile Avatar Maureen Emlet Dec 2014

Did not care for the narrator 's voice. Could not get into this story.

Profile Avatar lauri Preston Dec 2014

unimaginative story but it would have been made bearable if the narrator was any good at all. abysmal.

Profile Avatar Barbara White Nov 2014

The story was long and boring and the narrator was boring! Boring! Enough said!

Profile Avatar sondia meade Oct 2014

I have to finish a book if I start it, even if I don't like it, and I couldn't wait for this book to end. Reader was monotone, and book dragged on.

Profile Avatar Reggie Grondin Jul 2014

The reader was very monotone. Descriptive dialogue was overdone by the author.
