Summary
“A deeply soulful novel that comprehends love and cruelty, and separates the big people from the small of heart, without ever losing sympathy for those unfortunates who don’t know how to live properly.” —Zadie Smith

One of the most important and enduring books of the twentieth century, Their Eyes Were Watching God brings to life a Southern love story with the wit and pathos found only in the writing of Zora Neale Hurston. Out of print for almost thirty years—due largely to initial audiences’ rejection of its strong black female protagonist—Hurston’s classic has since its 1978 reissue become perhaps the most widely read and highly acclaimed novel in the canon of African-American literature. The audio is performed by the legendary Ruby Dee.

The actress who reads this story is riveting. Not to take anything away from the story itself, but I highly recommend it on the strength of the narration alone.

I HAVE LISTENED TO SOME 50 BOOKS OVER THE LAST YEAR AND THIS ONE WAS THE FIRST I WANTED TO REVIEW. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE BOOK YOU ARE CAPTURED BY THE NARRATORS( RUBY DEE) VOICE, INFLECTION AND CADENCE. THE STORY IS A TREASURE FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A DEEP LOVE FOR TRUE LITERATURE AND A LOVE FOR WORDS. THIS ONE I WOULD BUY IN A HEART BEAT JUST TO LISTEN AGAIN. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

this is full on theater, not a mere narration. before the second chapter ended i was already in tears. i haven't heard any other audiobook with more character and soul woven into every line.

First off, I generally do not read love stories. I had heard so many good things about the book and decided to find out for myself. The high expectations and the genre itself probably caused my mild disappointment. However, I do recommend the book for those more romantic and poetic than I. I liked this better than most "chic lit". The narrator was very good.

I loved the narrator. I don't know where the author got the title, but all the same, it was an interesting read.

I found this selection absolutely wonderful. I had tried to read this selection a time or two, but found it difficult to read the dialects the book was written in. The recording made the book come to life. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The authenticity of the dialogue is one of the most wonderful things about this book and nobody could have brought it to life better than Ruby Dee. Don't miss this one.

overall story was good, there were a few parts that lost my attention. Can be a bit hard to understand, with older phrases, styles, and such.

Ruby Dee's reading is perfection! Once you're plugged into the story, you forget... though there are many voices, there is only ONE person who is speaking! Superb! Of course the text is legend.

Zola’s writing is wonderfully descriptive and Ruby Dee’s narration was absolutely amazing. She didn’t just read this, she PERFORMED it. What a talented woman she was! Really enjoyed listening to this.
