Summary
Every young woman dreams of marrying a king. Everyone except for me. Because the king I am to wed has razor sharp fangs and a thirst for blood.

All my life I knew I'd come of age during the Hundred Year Reaping. According to the ridiculous treaty, two human girls are sent to the faelands as brides for the fearsome fae king and his devilish younger brother.

Not me. I was supposed to be safe. Two girls were chosen from my village already. But when they are executed for offending the king, my sister and I are sent in their place.

What a mess. Then again, maybe it's not so bad. The younger brother I'm paired with doesn't seem as monstrous as I'd expected. He's delightfully handsome too. But nothing compares to the chilling, dangerous beauty of the fae king. And when my sister flees the castle and her terrifying husband-to-be, I'm left to marry him instead.

If I go through with this, I might not survive my wedding night. If I don't, no one is safe, neither human nor fae. An ancient war will return, bringing devastation we haven't seen in a thousand years. Can I sacrifice myself for the good of my people? Or will a dangerous desire be the death of me first?

If I don't lose my heart, the king will certainly lose his. I'll carve it out with an iron blade if I have to.

I was sent a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review. TRIGGER WARNINGS: Blood, Gore, Violence, Drinking, Intoxication, Kidnapping, Sexual Content. The narrator for this book is the wonderful Caitlin Davies. She does some of my favorite audiobooks so, I can't say how excited I was to learn she was the one narrating because I enjoy her voice and style. She's easy to listen to and definitely adds to the experience. This book started out a little slow during the first half, but it was well used as set up. When there's three books, I'm okay if it moves at a slower pace. The second half of the book was non-stop plot. The ending...cliffhanger!!! The plot was exciting and compelling, if slightly predictable. Maybe there was slightly too much foreshadowing for me. It was still shown well, I just prefer a few surprises along the way. Definitely got my surprise at the end though. Speaking of showing, I prefer a showing of a story Vs. a telling of the story. This is something that Odette excels at. She pulled me right off my couch and into the book. The scenes are so rich. They're not over described by any means, just the perfect amount. I feel like I could take a walk through the story and touch the leaves or trees, or even feel the juice of a fruit trickle down my hand. Truly there was a little magic there. I fell in love with the characters. This was refreshing to me because it's been a couple reads since I felt for the characters in a book and I'm grateful for it. I felt the character's fears and passions much in the same way I felt Odette's imagery. She made me believe in who the characters are, which is not an easy feat. They feel like they could be real. Also, I bought the love story and all the connections between characters. One thing that did disappoint me in this book... There were a couple of scenes that were heavily influenced by another popular author. Usually, I don't mind, especially when it's a nod to a favorite book of mine, but in this case, most likely because Odette's imagery is so good, that when she tried to use those scenes influenced by someone else, it broke the illusion with quite a jolt, which unwillingly pulled me out of the story. I stopped thinking about this story and started thing about the other story. Odette's voice for story telling is so spectacular and capable of standing on it's own without the flattery of imitation. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book. I will absolutely be reading other books by Odette, starting with the rest of this series. I have to know how it ends for these characters. This book is rated R for sexual content. The other concerns expressed in the trigger warning section are present, but not necessarily at an R level. I recommend this to adults (18+) who enjoy a slow burn fantasy romance with a side of whodunit. (This book does contain a f/f relationship in the minor characters. The main romance is m/f.)
