Summary
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house—but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I will make him see that I'm still the woman he married; attractive, successful, the glue that holds our perfect family together. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own, something that would destroy everything I've already sacrificed so much for. But when the police arrive at my door asking questions about Alex's death that I can't answer, and threatening text messages start appearing on my phone, I know that someone close has been watching me very carefully.

Spectacular finish... had 2 possible endings I was expecting but it out did my prediction. Narrator was outstanding.

Recommended Good all the way through and the several plot twists at the end had me off balance.

Good book, a bit of over explaining at the end though!

Narrator was good. Story is extremely slow for the first few chapters. The main character is so needy and pathetic, she is hard to like. The rest of the story is predictable. I kept listening because it was like a train wreck that you can’t stop looking…the end was dull

Highly recommend.

Pretty good book. Story line has one thinking the main character couldn’t have any more bad luck by each choice she makes. That is until the unexpected plot twist in the end.

loved the narrator. I enjoyed the book as well, though some of the twists were pretty far-fetched.

Sucked me in. It didn’t end like what I thought but was better than where I thought it would end.

The number of self-inflicted catastrophes this woman has is just astonishing. This truly lacks credibility. It is almost difficult to listen to because of this. The writing is good, and the narrator is good. It just seems that the protagonist has a death wish.

This was a very good book. I thought the narrator was excellent. The storyline was interesting and in the twist at the end, the “culprit” wasn’t who I had expected. It’s definitely worth a listen.

The main character kept making bad decisions. I could not finish it

Be patient for the first fourth of the book. Pretty dull as are many books leading into the crux of the story. But after that it was exciting, leading into riveting. I couldn’t stop listening to what comes next. Thoroughly enjoyed this story.

i ended up really liking this book. in the beginning I didn't like it so much, I prefer not to have detailed information about intimately, luckly it was brief. the twists were the best.

Great book but at times it was difficult to follow certain ideas the main character just pops up with. I can't give specifics and ruin the story

I think I listened to this in 3 days! Amazing plot!

This is almost a 5-star book. The protagonist is unreliable, which leaves me feeling cheated of information at times. On the other hands, I don't think the book would work well as a 3rd person POV. There was needless repetition at times which had me thinking, "You already said that. Move on!" And I felt like the resolution at the end was slightly convoluted. The book could have benefited from one more run through the editor to clean up the material a bit. I did like the overall concept of the book. The narrator / voice talent did a really nice job with her reading.

I wasn’t sure the first half of the book if I was going to continue- it was a lot about the main character’s personality and how neurotic (I thought) she was. I’m glad I hung in there because the second half was very good. I realized the author was slowly developing the characters and plot so the second half could unravel and explain what she had deviously developed. The narrator was excellent

The main character was a bit odd, but I sure didn’t expect the ending.

Too much time spent in desperation, bad memories and worry. A quick tying up of all the loose ends not very satisfying. A sad girl reaching a little peace but still sad.

One of the very rare books I couldn't even finish. All the characters were equally unlikeable. I couldn't find anything worth continuing with it... Couldn't care what happened!

The narration was very good but the story was not great I almost quit but persevered. I don't recommend.

I was annoyed by the main character due to her moral values/character, and thought I had the story figured out only to be surprised at the end.

I loved the end! I think the narrator did a great job

I have never hated a main character so much. She is unethical and whiny. That being said, the plot was okay and the author was clever and tidy leaving no loose ends. The narrator was fabulous to listen to. Her character distinction was great. I enjoyed listening due to her great narration.

Very disappointed. The plot became more and more ridiculous the further into the book I went, and ended up being ludicrous. The main characters are uniformly unpleasant and act in ways which are totally unrealistic.

I loved this book. Kept you guessing. Couldn’t put it down.

What's with the main character. Bad decision after bad decision. Annoying is exactly the way to describe her.

I enjoyed this book and did not expect the twist! I mean, I knew there had to be something but I hadn't expected exactly what it was.

An ordinary and mostly unpleasant main character (who is an academic, wife and mother) is put through a series of career, marital, and bodily-harm squeezes and plot twists involving a cast of ordinary and mostly unpleasant people (who are academic, art, or adjacent types). The quality of the twisting was great and kept me interested, as did the sustained moral ambiguity of the main character and the never knowing who to suspect of what. Without these strengths, I would have resisted her internal monologue, which included distracting over-explanations and descriptions that didn't add much for me. But the audio narrator wisely kept up the pace and didn't get too involved, and this was a strength too.
