Unprotected: A Memoir

Billy Porter is so iconic! He is truly a one of a kind human being and makes this book come alive, his courage is unmatched along with his fierce determination to go out and get what's his. A wonderful story of grit, dedication, trauma, resilience, with such a wonderful triumph! This story has it all and I can only hope he comes out with more.

I have a new found and extream respect for mister Billy Porter now. After seeing the terrible comments from people after it was announced he would be portraying James Baldwin...and now reading his auto biography. I feel incredibly excited to see his portrayal. I believe he will do a masterful job and hope he gives a Oscar...no wait I know he will give a Oscar winning performance for all the haters.

Billy’s story is haunting. Nobody else could have narrated his memoir, and I am so glad to have had a chance to get to know him better. My daughter was the make-up supervisor on the First National Tour of Kinky Boots and had the amazing experience of doing Billy’s Lola make-up for the week the show was in his hometown, Pittsburgh. She spoke to me about his kindness and his talent. Thank you, Billy, for sharing your story - the struggles and the triumphs- with us!

Mr. Porter has had so many struggles, and never gave up. He believed in himself when others did not. His memoir opened my eyes and my heart. His success is well deserved.

Billy Porter was funny and witty as he told his truths. I laughed (a lot). I cried. I reflected. I learned some valuable truths to many misconceptions I once held. I am glad that I saw him in Cinderella and that it led me to pick up his book!
