Summary
A landmark in women’s empowerment—as relevant as ever after a year marked by unprecedented political protest—that honors female sexuality in all its complexity.

'I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don't think about them. . . . So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to old women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them.'

So begins Eve Ensler's hilarious, eye-opening tour into the last frontier, the forbidden zone at the heart of every woman. Adapted from the award-winning one-woman show that's rocked audiences around the world, this groundbreaking book gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories, transforming the question mark hovering over the female anatomy into a permanent victory sign. With laughter and compassion, Ensler transports her audiences to a world we've never dared to know, guaranteeing that no one who reads The Vagina Monologues will ever look at a woman's body the same way again.

“Extraordinary . . . a compelling rhapsody of the female essence.”—Chicago Tribune

The Vagina Monologues is a must read/listen for all women (and men!). This is a powerful piece of work; extremely thought provoking and engaging. It’s raw brutally honest writing with a "no holds barred" attitude is refreshing. This book is a clear reminder that it’s time for America to step out of the shadows of its Puritan heritage and recognize the power and beauty of being sexual and being female. I encourage you to take on this adventure…no, I dare you!

An absolutely straightforward and much needed book. The narrator is also great.

I just didn't enjoy this book at all. It was mildly interesting at times and rather distubing (in a bad way) at others. Considering that it takes so long for the CDs to be sent back and forth to this company, this was a huge waste of time for me.

Interesting perspective. Worth listening to if you enjoy thinking of different things in new ways. Some parts are hilarious! Some parts are very difficult to listen to but are also stories that should be told - though they are events that should never have happened in the first place. I hope a man writes the penis monologues some day because I'm sure that perspective would be interesting too!

Will someone please explain the relevance of this book to me. I guess I'm missing something because I neither found it funny or informative. Tragic yes, that so much of our lives are dominated by what is between our legs whether male or female. Why not just be without being preoccupied with such nonsense. There is so much more to each of us and the world we live in. Get over it already!

Rented this because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Not much, if you ask me. It was neither as offensive as some had led me to expect, nor as enlightening or innovative as its proponents would suggest. This work may very well help those women who are oppressed, repressed, suppressed, or abused. If so, more power to it, for that is indeed a good thing. But unless you have a vagina and need your vagina validated, there really isn't a whole lot of point here. I don't want to judge it too harshly, because the inspiration for this work sprang from a serious problem, and to the extent that it helps that problem, it is worthwhile. I'll just say that it's not for me. Although I might have known that without listening to it.
