Summary
Can a boy be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine “reassign” sex? Is our sex “assigned” to us in the first place? What is the most loving response to a person experiencing a conflicted sense of gender? What should our law say on matters of “gender identity”? When Harry Became Sally provides thoughtful answers to questions arising from our transgender moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, Ryan Anderson offers a nuanced view of human embodiment, a balanced approach to public policy on gender identity, and a sober assessment of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. Everyone has something at stake in the controversies over transgender ideology, and Anderson offers a strategy for pushing back with principle and prudence, compassion and grace.

I knew of Andersen's conservative leanings prior to listening to this. And, I actually saw that as a positive since the current zeitgeist around this topic is quite radical and not open to contrarian debate. I found this book to be a much needed injection of rationality that challenges some of the radical ideology that is being pushed. Andersen focuses on data and amplifies the voices of doctors and scientists who disagree with some of the medical and psychological advice being purveyed to the families with children who grappling with confusions about their gender identities. He does a nice job laying out a measured, compassionate argument that urges patience and caution and points out the dangers of the permanancies of exogenous medications and surgeries. I also have to give credit to Andersen for looking towards the right side of the political spectrum and challenging the sometimes rigid, ossified interpretations of gender roles as a source of gender confusion in children.

Thoughtful, scientific, respectful, and fair. I purchased this book simply because it was canceled, and I wanted to learn why this title was banned whilst others - many more sinister, or ridiculous - are not. Perhaps the title was too shocking and critics didn’t read beyond those 4 words. Or, more probably, the author explores pertinent questions and ideas and offers a wealth of factual data in his answers, and sound logic is the scariest, most dangerous concept of all! He does reach a (controversial) conclusion, and while others are free to disagree, mature dialogue insists that the substance of his argument is reasonable and even respectful. He is not selling hyperbolic, emotional proclamations backed by flimsy, questionable anecdotal evidence, aka “propaganda”. I admittedly finished schooling over a decade ago, but I’m shocked to learn that good writing with ample evidence and a respectful tone is not only unappreciated, but is actually banned. In summary: this is a great book that offered me personally a great deal of insight into the transgender issues, especially as I’m navigating the very “woke” reality of my recently pronounced gender dysphoric teenaged daughter. This book offers plenty to learn and ponder, and never ventures into offensive language (even within his conclusion).
