Summary
The masterpiece that started Terry Goodkind's New York Times bestselling epic Sword of Truth

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.

In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out.

Wizard's First Rule is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

one of my favorite writers and he helps me get through my boring shifts at work. thank you Mr goodkind for writing this masterpiece.

This is not a good book, linear and outright boring more often than not. The narrator is alright, but tends to be a bit melodramatic at times that don't warrant it.

The last time I read this book was the third reading I believe. It has been many years, and because of VERY negative reviews I avoided the audio books. After all, I know the story very well. There is nothing wrong with this title and I have enjoyed it. The only thing in the more critical reviews that I find to be true is that the narrator did scare me a time or two. He really takes the dramatic and suspenseful scenes quite seriously.

Profile Avatar Kristina I Dec 2017

Love the book. The narrator just scared me couple of times as he screamed through the book.

Profile Avatar Tina Xu Dec 2015

The narrator was overly dramatic especially at all the unnecessary moments...but then again he tried his best and there wasn't much he can do with such a linear and pedantic story. It was like Lord of the Rings watered down with stock characters, unimaginative names, predictable plot, and a boring villain. Can't believe this is a whole series...

Amazing read and even better to listen. Amazing narrative.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2020

the narrator is amasing, giving life to the book

Profile Avatar Clifford N. Nov 2020

I have read these books a couple of times and this narrator was amazing. I could picture the intent of every word.

Profile Avatar Betty S. Dec 2022

So much....too much.... everything....it feels like the author decided to put every plot or fantasy trope into one book. The characters are cookie cutter bland and predictable, same with the plot. Overdone emotionality and bad dialogue. Lots is self righteous idiocy on display. Props to you if you can get through it. chapter 26 I just decided to look up the ending because I couldn't deal with the overly predictable plot movement anymore. Let me tell you I needn't have bothered. It ended the way I thought it would when I was at about chapter 15....

Profile Avatar Seth R. Nov 2023

I love the story of Richard and his adventures. The narrator was great except for a few voices but the performance (and it was a performance) was great! Highly recommended.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2023

love this book! and the narrator has a great voice really captivating the characters perfectly

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2023

".. having wizard thoughts" Felt very generic with magical magic that magically does magical stuff. And the plot felt very hand fisted and you very quickly will feel like you know where the hole story is going.

Profile Avatar Philip Spall Jul 2023

Great story. I will be moving on to the next book in the series

Profile Avatar Laurel M. Jun 2023

epic story telling voice and the details provided in each novel are perfect for creating that mental movie image and allowing you to drift into the story. wonderful on both parts!

Profile Avatar Thomas H. Jun 2023

Definitely NOT for children. Overall the story is good and I mostly enjoyed it. However, the descriptions of the antagonists and the "training" they conduct on others (read that as 'torture' instead of training) are TOO graphic and disturbing. Frankly, I just stopped reading it. I tried to skip over the worst parts but found that it had ruined my enjoyment of the book. Indeed, I consider it very unlikely that I will read anything else by the author. If you are not disturbed by "Man's inhumanity to Man", then you may enjoy it. I certainly did not.

While it hasn't precisely aged well as a full series, once upon a time this was my favorite. This first book is still one I love.

Profile Avatar nate haas Dec 2022

my favorite book ever

Profile Avatar Austin Becker Dec 2021

One of my favorite books of all time and the start of one of my favorite series. I have listened through the whole series more times than I can count and I never get tired of listening to this great story.

Profile Avatar Leonard M. Oct 2021

it would be nice for a woman to read the wemons parts

Profile Avatar Jack Jul 2021

Loved every second of this book fantastic, narrator excellent with accents

Profile Avatar Sergio C. Jul 2021

These books are a mixed bag for me. There are some beautiful imagery and storytelling at times. At others, it feels bloated by filler and unnecessary stories. There's so much in here with the good and bad that it all depends on what you want as a reader. Be warned that there are speeches galore in here. There will be some predictable plot lines. But on the other hand, you will have some interesting takes on some old tropes, you will see some twists that you might not expect, and there are some graphic moments that feel stretched but in some ways were entirely needed for the later stories in the series. If you like high fantasy but are limited by time, you might do better with shorter, more concise stories, but if you want to rip into every facet you can of a world and don't mind some heavy handed dialogue at times, definitely give WFR a go.

This is not the original audiobook. This narrorator's voice sounds too old to be Richard, like a 60 yr old reading a 30 yr old part. He also reads stiffly and too fast making the story feel rushed.

Profile Avatar John G. Jun 2021

Great book

Profile Avatar David G. May 2021

Great book and well narrated. The narrator brought the written lines to life.

Profile Avatar Chris A. Feb 2021

I listened to this YEARS ago in the car on a family trip when it was on cassette. ive read every book in the series and the more recent Death's Mistress series. I have loved every word and adventure. I don't know if Mr. Goodkind will ever see this, but thank you...From the bottom of my heart. Thank you for putting your imagination out there for us all to see.

Profile Avatar Rosemary C. Oct 2019

Endured 9 books by Ms Hobb treatment of Fitz. Thought that was bad Mr Goodkind I endured one book this one with Richard. Felt every abuse he went through. Will not go through anymore.

Profile Avatar David F. May 2018

it was a very good book. How ever the characters seemed to almost be an iteration of the same person.

Profile Avatar Glen D Jul 2017

A very enjoyable listen. I have been meaning to read this book but didn't have the opportunity. This app gave me the chance.

Profile Avatar Amber L Apr 2017

I've never liked this narrator for this series. I feel as though his narration ruined my favorite series.

Profile Avatar Dennis onek Jan 2017

A fantastic series but the narrator is a bit too melodramatic. He tries too hard to express the feelings of the characters in the book.

Profile Avatar Thomas Vormwald Jul 2016

Loved the tv series. The book is even more amazing. The narrator here is perfect. He almost sounds like Zed from the TV show which made it even better!

Profile Avatar Janet Dunn-Muse Jun 2016

First book I have listened to on Audiobooks.com and loved it. I intend to listen to the rest of the series. The narration was perfect.

Profile Avatar Eric Thompson Jun 2016

Great book and the narrator was good. I can't wait to listen to the next book.

Profile Avatar Aaron Perez Apr 2016

Fantastic story. Have read, and listened to this book many a time. Solid narration as well. Love this series

Profile Avatar Shaun Perez Apr 2016

A finely crafted work of art and masterfully narrated. Love this series.

Profile Avatar Corrie Collier Feb 2016

Very well done, I loved this book when ni was young and listened to it for the first time recently and loved it all over again!

Profile Avatar James Harris Sep 2015

Ive loved this book ever since I had first picked it up in high school. Its an amazing and engaging story, focused on characters that you will genuinely fall in love with as the chapters quickly pass by. The magic, and mystery, of this World coupled with the passion, pain, joy and love, we find along the way with it truly entice your heart and mind with every turn of the page. I love this story. And I'm so happy the Narration did it justice. The voice over artist really did a great job captivating me as he lead me through Richard's journey, just as reading the pages had those years ago. 5/5 You wont be displeased with the time invested into this rich and wondrous story.

Profile Avatar wendi line Jul 2015

This story is 1,000 times better than the television series "Legend of the Seeker." It is a great listen.

Profile Avatar Allen Lake Dec 2014

This book has been my favorite book since I was young. Awesome storyline, characters, and twists. The narrator does great as well. I was a little worried that he would be doing all of the female voices as well, but as soon as he flipped up and did Shar, I was convinced. He didn't disappoint.

Profile Avatar Joshua taggart Jan 2014

I really enjoyed the narration, fantastic book. Really wish they would've kept him around.
