Summary
The masterpiece that started Terry Goodkind's New York Times bestselling epic Sword of Truth

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.

In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out.

Wizard's First Rule is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

The last time I read this book was the third reading I believe. It has been many years, and because of VERY negative reviews I avoided the audio books. After all, I know the story very well. There is nothing wrong with this title and I have enjoyed it. The only thing in the more critical reviews that I find to be true is that the narrator did scare me a time or two. He really takes the dramatic and suspenseful scenes quite seriously.

Love the book. The narrator just scared me couple of times as he screamed through the book.

This is not a good book, linear and outright boring more often than not. The narrator is alright, but tends to be a bit melodramatic at times that don't warrant it.

The narrator was overly dramatic especially at all the unnecessary moments...but then again he tried his best and there wasn't much he can do with such a linear and pedantic story. It was like Lord of the Rings watered down with stock characters, unimaginative names, predictable plot, and a boring villain. Can't believe this is a whole series...

I have read these books a couple of times and this narrator was amazing. I could picture the intent of every word.

So much....too much.... everything....it feels like the author decided to put every plot or fantasy trope into one book. The characters are cookie cutter bland and predictable, same with the plot. Overdone emotionality and bad dialogue. Lots is self righteous idiocy on display. Props to you if you can get through it. chapter 26 I just decided to look up the ending because I couldn't deal with the overly predictable plot movement anymore. Let me tell you I needn't have bothered. It ended the way I thought it would when I was at about chapter 15....

I love the story of Richard and his adventures. The narrator was great except for a few voices but the performance (and it was a performance) was great! Highly recommended.

".. having wizard thoughts" Felt very generic with magical magic that magically does magical stuff. And the plot felt very hand fisted and you very quickly will feel like you know where the hole story is going.

epic story telling voice and the details provided in each novel are perfect for creating that mental movie image and allowing you to drift into the story. wonderful on both parts!

Definitely NOT for children. Overall the story is good and I mostly enjoyed it. However, the descriptions of the antagonists and the "training" they conduct on others (read that as 'torture' instead of training) are TOO graphic and disturbing. Frankly, I just stopped reading it. I tried to skip over the worst parts but found that it had ruined my enjoyment of the book. Indeed, I consider it very unlikely that I will read anything else by the author. If you are not disturbed by "Man's inhumanity to Man", then you may enjoy it. I certainly did not.

While it hasn't precisely aged well as a full series, once upon a time this was my favorite. This first book is still one I love.

These books are a mixed bag for me. There are some beautiful imagery and storytelling at times. At others, it feels bloated by filler and unnecessary stories. There's so much in here with the good and bad that it all depends on what you want as a reader. Be warned that there are speeches galore in here. There will be some predictable plot lines. But on the other hand, you will have some interesting takes on some old tropes, you will see some twists that you might not expect, and there are some graphic moments that feel stretched but in some ways were entirely needed for the later stories in the series. If you like high fantasy but are limited by time, you might do better with shorter, more concise stories, but if you want to rip into every facet you can of a world and don't mind some heavy handed dialogue at times, definitely give WFR a go.

This is not the original audiobook. This narrorator's voice sounds too old to be Richard, like a 60 yr old reading a 30 yr old part. He also reads stiffly and too fast making the story feel rushed.

I listened to this YEARS ago in the car on a family trip when it was on cassette. ive read every book in the series and the more recent Death's Mistress series. I have loved every word and adventure. I don't know if Mr. Goodkind will ever see this, but thank you...From the bottom of my heart. Thank you for putting your imagination out there for us all to see.

A fantastic series but the narrator is a bit too melodramatic. He tries too hard to express the feelings of the characters in the book.

Ive loved this book ever since I had first picked it up in high school. Its an amazing and engaging story, focused on characters that you will genuinely fall in love with as the chapters quickly pass by. The magic, and mystery, of this World coupled with the passion, pain, joy and love, we find along the way with it truly entice your heart and mind with every turn of the page. I love this story. And I'm so happy the Narration did it justice. The voice over artist really did a great job captivating me as he lead me through Richard's journey, just as reading the pages had those years ago. 5/5 You wont be displeased with the time invested into this rich and wondrous story.

This book has been my favorite book since I was young. Awesome storyline, characters, and twists. The narrator does great as well. I was a little worried that he would be doing all of the female voices as well, but as soon as he flipped up and did Shar, I was convinced. He didn't disappoint.

If I was to rate each book in this 11 book series independently, the beginning books would earn 5 stars with a declining value as the series progresses. The story line is interesting enough, but as the books go on the author apparently changes his contract with the publisher, and by the end is clearly being paid by the word. Book number 9 (Chainfire) has 22 CD's, and could be easily reduced to 5 CD's without losing any meaningful content. The author is in desperate need of a strong editor. To add insult to injury, the 10th book in the series is the only book not available for rent. So if you want to finish the series in sequence you will need to dish out an additional $50 for the privilege of listening to what, I am quite sure, will be another long-winded repetitive story very much in need of an abridged version. I'm not listening to the final book at the moment, in the hopes that the second to last book may become available for rent at some point. But not really hoping too much...

This is one of the best books I've ever read. In fact, I've read it many times over and will read it again along with the other books in the series. The love story between the main characters, the magic and adventure are all addicting.
