Summary
Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's novel, Anne of Green Gables tells the story of a red headed orphan girl with a personality you can't help but love. Despite her "tragical" past, Anne's optimism and imagination have helped her to always see the best in things. Anne's life changes considerably when she is accidentally adopted by the Cuthberts, a brother and sister who thought they were getting a boy to help out on the farm. The Cuthberts decide Anne will have to be sent back to the orphange but before they know it, she has begun to work her way into their hearts.

The book itself is a wonderful story, humorous and moving. The only complaint is that some of the readers are definitely substandard and do a very poor job of portraying the characters. Still worth the listen.

Love this story! It was my favorite childhood book and I enjoyed listening to it.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2020

Loved the book ! To many different narrators some good the others not so good

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2019

Wonderful story. The changing of readers throughout the story was very distracting. Some of the readers did a good job, but there were a few that were really bad. I had a hard time focusing on the story at times.

I just love it!!!

What a delightful story!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2018

This book is a very good and classic read. Anne’s faults prove to be very funny and this book is also a book of self discovery. The only complaint I have is that the narrators change from chapter to chapter I understand that this book is very long and it is free but I wish the narrator is the same the whole book

Profile Avatar Erin s Jun 2017

Lovely story for the young and old. I really love Anne and wish I had read it sooner

Profile Avatar jin h May 2017

It's so easy to read!!

Profile Avatar Louise Giesbrecht Dec 2016

Loved the book but not the introductions in between.

Profile Avatar Kristi LenartRikert Oct 2016

Awesome story! It's a classic. It has horrible narration though.

Profile Avatar Shannon Fath Jun 2016

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and delighted in the jubilant character of Anne Shirley. Most of the narrators were lovely, and although the introductions at the beginning of the chapter thoroughly annoyed me, I found the listening quite enjoyable. Readers will love L. M. Montgomery's fabulously crafted tale and will fall in love with red haired, imaginative Anne Shirley!

Profile Avatar LaDonna Davies Apr 2016

Hate the different voices and what they say at the begging of the chapters not happy with it.:(( But other than that I loved the book.

Profile Avatar Terresa DeMoss Sep 2015

I love this classic story. Most of the narrators bring Anne to life beautifully.

Profile Avatar Annie K. Nov 2018

I love this story but there are different narrators with every chapter. Some are good and some not so much, some with street noise behind them.

Profile Avatar Amanda B. Oct 2018

Love the story. Some narrators were better than others.

Profile Avatar Hodie K Jan 2018

Lucy Maud Montgomery is turning in her grave at the ruination of her charming coming of age novel in this terrible audio version. What a way to ruin a great book. A pity, since the story is lovely. My first (and last) Librivox recording. A truly painful experience.

Profile Avatar Krista D Jul 2017

It was a sweet book. Simple and not much for plot changes but nice overall. I don't care for the multiple changes in readers. Makes you loose touch with the story because everyone reads so differently.

Profile Avatar Lupi M Jun 2017

Love the story but the narration was horrible! Was completely annoyed by the changing of narrators every few chapters plus reciting each chapter the name of the book, author & recording info.

Profile Avatar Jaysa Fulton Nov 2016

I love this book. I'm going to download this one.

Profile Avatar Deborah Endres Apr 2016

This is a true classic. Some narrators were great, some not so great.

Profile Avatar Laura Martinez Mar 2016

Some of the narrator wher just to awful I could here the hard breathing pan the pages shifts oh the bad audio last 3 chapters

Profile Avatar Dianna W Jul 2017

Loved the book. It was free so I didn't mind different narrators. All did a good job. Thank you

Profile Avatar Jenifer Jones Mar 2017

Great story...however multiple narrators made for difficult listening at times.

Profile Avatar Shelly Hutchinson Jun 2016

Love this classic, i can listen to it a 100 times and still get wrapped up in the story.

Profile Avatar Robert Hogan Jan 2016

I was never a lover of reading; and, I never found the time to read. I the past, I do remember hearing about various books.and classics such as Green Gables; and, now I.have nothing but time; so I' have been really enjoying all the countless titles you have on audiobooks.

Profile Avatar Sandra Bernight Dec 2015

Very nice. I still do not like the interruption but it has to be done.

Profile Avatar Olga Pesetskaya May 2014

I loved this book! its easy to understand and a enjoyable to read. The only thing that bothered me was that the character Diana voice is too mature for her character. but other then that,

Profile Avatar Kristin V. Jul 2020

Wonderful to finally read the book after loving the 80s movie version. I actually found it very sweet to hear all the different narrators and know where they’re from. It inspired me to do a Libra Vox recording, too!

Profile Avatar Sherry H. Jun 2020

Profile Avatar Patricia L. Jul 2019

Nostalgic. A good now as fifty years ago.Especiallly poignant for those of us who have been adopted.

Profile Avatar Constance M. May 2019

Really enjoyed. Listened in car mostly. I did listen at home when my commute was short.

Profile Avatar Miriam Crothall Mar 2016

the narrator pronounced things properly which is good cos I've got a hearing impairment and struggle with reading I enjoy listening thank you I appreciate it

Profile Avatar Marcelina W. Mar 2025

The book is wonderful - but the recordings are done by various readers and this was distracting. But still worth a download as a free audiobook.

Profile Avatar dmp! Feb 2025

I love! Love this book. It was easy to listen to.

Profile Avatar torie Feb 2025

I real like it so much

Profile Avatar Debby K. Jan 2025

It’s free so I feel it’s wrong to complain! Also everyone prefers a different reading style I myself find it incredibly distracting to hear someone trying to mimic voices or personalities. I rather imagine it myself. I don’t mind the change of narrators ,but I struggled with the one that kept trying to read breathless like Anne talks and then switched to super monotone. But again, if anyone has an issue with any of this , go pay the $25per book!

Profile Avatar Super Mommio Aug 2024

A lovely classic for girls, and women who used to be girls ;-) I love Anne’s zest for life, and all of the inadvertent scrapes she gets herself into! Most of the narrators were good.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2024

Loved this book! The narrator was great!

Profile Avatar Scarlett H. Feb 2024

I really like this book! I love how several people narrate it so it is more realistic. I love that Anne can just keep talking and talking forever and ever! I sometimes am like that, I can just keep talking on and on so I understand Anne a lot! Great book, highly recommended!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2024

Love the story. Have read it before. But the narration isn’t so good because it keeps switching between people ( some are good others not so much). Still enjoyed it and would recommend.

Profile Avatar Talita A. Dec 2023

Good book but the recording and the narrators, awful, painfully awful!

Profile Avatar Kyle A. Dec 2023

I thought there were going to be various readers; Where are they? As far as the book itself, this is a classic! One should re-read it when one gets a chance!

Profile Avatar Andrea V. Dec 2023

I don't like that the readers change very few chapters and some of them are not that good

Profile Avatar Kato V. Sep 2023

this book is lovely and the story and the characters hold a close place in my heart. I couldn't manage the audiobook however not because of the narrator's themselves but of the quality of the recordings.

Profile Avatar Smileykat Jul 2023

Enjoyable book about an orphan child growing up. Many narrators with some better than others. A consistent very good narrator would have made it much better.I listened to it as a free book. I got more caught up with it as she got older…and then wished there was a bit more when it ended.

Profile Avatar Shils Apr 2023

This story was beautiful and sweet and at times funny and heart breaking, some of the narrators were good and some were awful- I kept having to adjust the speeds, I don’t want to criticise as they anyone but I much prefer a single narrator.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2023

Most, but not all narrators really good.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2023

Ticking off a bucket list and enjoyed this book very much. Narrated very well by most, some not so well, sadly.

Profile Avatar Debby D. Mar 2023

I really liked the story. Unfortunately the narrations were pretty bad. Almost every chapter had a different person reading. The sound levels were all over the place, sometimes loud sometimes quiet. Only one of the many narrators was any good. One person made everyone sound like they had southern accents. One guy talked like a robot.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2023

Wonderful story........However, it was very distracting to have so many different "readers". Rather than listening to the story, the frequent change of narrators made this book confusing. EXAMPLE: the main character, Anne, is a child. Sometimes she sounds wonderfully like a child. The next chapter she is a man from India, with a strong accent. The she is fan older woman from the midwest, with a noted twang. Next up, little Anne is once again a man, only this time she speaks with an Irish accent........come on audiobooks! who was responsible for this travesty? As an aside, one chapter in particular had a constant harsh background "fuzzy traffic-like" HISSSSSS. Poor production quality! Very bad and I would assume embarrassing to you?

Profile Avatar Mathur R. Dec 2022

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2022

Profile Avatar Ammy P. Oct 2022

very good

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2022

I love this story. It’s one of my favorites! BUT stopping between each and every chapter to tell me that it’s librivox and the author and who’s reading and where DRIVES ME NUTS! It makes me want to stop listening!

Profile Avatar Justine S. Sep 2022

The story is so charming. It’s a great read/listen even as an adult. Most of the narrators are good but some are not great. The interruption between each chapter is also annoying but the story is still worth it.

Profile Avatar Linda L. Jun 2022

I did not care for there being a different narrator for each chapter. The continuity was damageged.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

Difficult to listen to and understand

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2022

I'm glad I listened to this classic. I liked it, and I didn't like it. The book is read by several narrators. They are all volunteers, and none of them are all that great. A few of the recordings have white noise in the background that is a little annoying. I increased the listening speed to 1.5. This helped make the listen more bearable. It is a story worth listening to if you can tolerate the amateur recording.

Profile Avatar Destineestoll Mar 2022

My favorite book growing up

Profile Avatar Jeremiah E. Mar 2022

Classic and amazing!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2021

I am a gramma in her 70s and i found this book to be delightful. Sorry I missed reading it as a youngster, but there's a lot in it that adults can appreciate that may be missed by younger people. I did not mind the switching narrators because they all did a fine job bringing the characters to life [except perhaps one, who read only one chapter towards the end.] I, too, don't like the Librivox intros and endings to every single chapter--we know that already!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2021

It was annoying to have different narrators and some of them had a rather boring way of speaking. I thought it was unnecessary to have the advertisements in between each chapter. The story was very enjoyable.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2021

Lovely story, but the change in narrators was hard to listen to.

Profile Avatar Lauren H. Jan 2021

Most of the narrators were good idk what’s going on with the last few chapters but there horrible background noise in chapter 35. However I have quite enjoyed the book! Definitely worth the listen!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2020

Horrible to listen to

Profile Avatar John L. Nov 2020

too many different narrator's. It becomes a distraction. this is a sweet novel that makes a person feel good about life.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2020

The different readers every chapter really bugged me, but the story was awesome

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2020

Really enjoyed the story. I look forward to reading the others in the series. I did not enjoy the narration. Having different ones was not good. Some were very interesting but others were dull.

Profile Avatar Monika B. Aug 2020

Too many different narrators spoiled the flow of the story.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

The book it’s self was good but it had 20 different narrators and some of the were awful.

Profile Avatar Sonja M. Jul 2020

This is such a beautiful story. I read the novel decades ago and loved it even more now. The recording was free, which I am very grateful for. Some Readers were decent, but some were very hard to listen to.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2020

I have given five stars for this lovely classic children’s story. However, I’d give only one star for the awful introductions between each chapter, they were really annoying. Also, I didn’t like the constant change of readers either. For these treasons I will not be listening to books from here again.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2020

Most of the readers were great but I unfortunately could not stand the narrator for the last half of the book. Made me sick to my stomach the way she read! She was capable of speaking like a normal person because she did here and there. I can't understand why they chose to have her read so much. If they were set on her reading because she's from Prince Edward Island, they could have at least asked her to redo it in a palatable way. But maybe it's just me. Ruined a book I was enjoying so much!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2020

My favourite book always as been no keen on narration

Profile Avatar Kevin M. Feb 2020

Libravox pausing at every chapter for a commercial was distracting and took away from the story.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2020

I have only read the first 10 minutes for my homework and I love it! The only problem is the author -I believe- was sat to close to the microphone as when she said the ‘P’ and ‘t’ it was a bit like spitting

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2020

TRASHY BOOK

Profile Avatar Evelyn L. Jan 2020

Delightful and enchanting story!! Delicious classic! Most of the readers were very good. Chapter 36 read a bit too fast; nice voice tonality though. Chapter 35 Technical problems. Reader very good but sounds like ocean waves were in the background and the reader was hard to hear.

Profile Avatar Cheryl M. Nov 2019

I didn’t like the multiple narrators. It was too disjointed. I’ve listened to many of these public audiobooks and they have either one or two narrators with a better outcome

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2019

Some of the narrators are so dreadful, I had no choice but to fast forward through them. What a terrible thing to have to do to such a wonderful story.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2019

The story of Anne is so very charming it was sad to hear it come to and end. The narration wasn't too bad with the exception of using a male voice in a couple of chapters. Especially at the end. Anne is a vivacious character and fully needed a female voice.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2019

How can you do a review of this famous book when you know there are some readers who could quote the book verbatim?! I have read the book before, but it has been such a time that there were parts I had not remembered. I found myself very moved by the pleading of young orphan Ann-withan-e Shirley not to be sent back because she wasn’t a boy. I was very disturbed at how previous ‘carers’ had treated her. I felt a thrill with the young girl as she discovered the beauty of the countryside around her. And as she grew, I yearned as she did for her to do well and excel, was glad when Matthew “put his oar in “, begged her to be forgiving, longed for Marilla to bend a bit more and cried for Anne when sadness came into her life. It was a very good book to return to as an adult and now I shall indulge myself by listening to the books which follow. The readers were ok...all but the one who was way over the top on the yearning aspect to the dialogue!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2019

Enjoyed listening to this book. Some of narrators quite poot

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2019

Story was okay. Some of the readers were good some of the readers were bad. The should not add the submissions if they have stubbles over words or messed up during the recording.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2019

I enjoyed the story. The readers were ok. Having an extra 1 1/2-2 hours just in disclaimers at the beginning and end of each chapter was painful and annoying.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2019

The book is great but the narration is patchy and some of it truly awful.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2019

I love this story but had a very difficult time with a different narrator for every chapter.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2019

I like books with one narration better. Great fun read though. I liked the character development a lot.

Profile Avatar Kerin M. Mar 2019

Story is great! Too many narrators and the constant advertisement in between chapters was very distracting.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2019

3 1/2 hours in.. this book is all rainbows and sunshine. Even the fact that her parents died is glitter and cupcakes now that shes been adopted by the perfect people. gag me.

Profile Avatar Karen P Mar 2018

A great book but the narration is not good at all.

Profile Avatar Diana Thomason Jan 2017

Great story, but I don't like the narration. I'm not a fan of the narrator "doing voices" when a character speaks.

Profile Avatar Sherry Brilliant Dec 2013

I love this story and the main narrator was lovely, however the different voices of the characters was distracting. It was especially strange to have an old English woman as the voice of Diana, a young girl. Also the advertisement at the beginning of every chapter is silly and ruins the entire experience. A bad bad bad choice this one.
