THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLING DEBUT PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER YOU CAN'T MISS!

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

“A hair-raising debut, both unsettling and addictive...A chilling thriller that will keep you reading long into the night.” —Mary Kubica, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Good Girl

“This debut is guaranteed to haunt you...Warning: brace yourself.” —Bustle (10 New Thrillers to Read This Summer)

“The sense of believably and terror that engulfs Behind Closed Doors doesn't waver.” —The Associated Press, picked up by The Washington Post

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth; she has charm and elegance. He’s a dedicated attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener and cook, and dotes on her disabled younger sister. Though they are still newlyweds, they seem to have it all. You might not want to like them, but you do. You’re hopelessly charmed by the ease and comfort of their home, by the graciousness of the dinner parties they throw. You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are inseparable.

Some might call this true love. Others might wonder why Grace never answers the phone. Or why she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. Or why she never seems to take anything with her when she leaves the house, not even a pen. Or why there are such high-security metal shutters on all the downstairs windows.

Some might wonder what’s really going on once the dinner party is over, and the front door has closed.

From bestselling author B. A. Paris comes the gripping thriller and international phenomenon Behind Closed Doors.

Jack, Jack, jack, what an evil monster of a man. He's killed his mother and set his father up to go to jail for the murder, changes his name only to inflict more hatm to others. A man who has to control his wife's every move, to what and when she eats to what she wears. He loves to see people in fear and is looking forward to torturing Grace's sister who is disabled with Down syndrome. A crazy book, but good.....the revenge is so sweet. #book10of2019 #bookworm #whatsnext

How am I the ONLY one who hated this book. It was not only boring but repetitive. The author keeps repeating the same things over and over. Mind numbing. The storyline is Ridiculous. I pushed through thinking it could possibly pick up. NOPE. Terrible.

I was sad it ended. Narrator is very natural. Plot was surprising with no obvious foreshadowing. I just downloaded her second book. I’m hoping it’s as good as this was!

Having read The Breakdown, by the same author I was excited to begin this audiobook. I could not stop once I has started! Audiobooks are my treat for when I commute but I continued to listen to this one, long in to the night because it was so full of suspense . A gripping novel .

I expected some sort of abuse when I read the summary of the book, but it was nothing like I imagined. The story was well written and well told. Having been through something similar (but not quite to the same degree) I hated some of the characters and wished some would have done things differently. I found myself anxious and relieved and anxious again while listening. Well planned out and executed. Looking forward to the author's next endeavor.

This book wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that great. I've seen story lines before where the perfect gentleman turns out to be a scumbag once they get married. The problem I had with this book is that despite that Jack is an evil person, we never know why. Yeah, he says he killed his mother and blamed it on his father, but even Grace questions whether or not it is true because Jack is such a fabulist and liar. Yes, we understand that he finds joy in watching women suffer mentally, but what could possibly motivate him to want to mentally torture a woman with Down Syndrome? He puts on a big act, buys this huge house, spends all kinds of money so he can inflict as much mental abuse on a disabled person as he possibly can? Ok. WHY? By just turning Jack into this evil sadist, he's a one-note antagonist — like a Jason or Michael Myers horror movie character who is there just to kill.

This book kept me terrified and wanting more! My husband did not understand the ending but I found it perfectly done with no need for explanation. The reader is fabulous making it so easy to separate the characters with her different voices used.

I found the action repetitive & tedious. If the plot was not so unbelievable, it would be disturbing. Jack was incredulously evil & his wife another long-suffering victim. It was only toward the end of the novel that the story became exciting & advanced at an interesting pace. Laura FINALLY does what should have been done chapters earlier. Laura’s beloved Down’s Syndrome sister was refreshing, believable & ends up the true heroine by helping Laura commit the necessary deed. In essence, she not only saved herself & her sister, but also this novel.

How did this even get published? The characters lack any depth whatsoever and are unbelievable - and the whole thing is completely unrealistic and also unbelievable. Inspiring though in making me think I could write a novel though if this is what’s out there. Forced myself to get through it.. checked the box’s for the basic story telling ingredients, note - BASIC.

Profile Avatar

This was the first time I described a book as utter drivel. The writing was terrible and repetitive in my opinion. The villain husband is a caricature; exaggerated to the extreme. The entire plot was completely improbable and contrived. The MC was way too gullible. The dialogue was terrible. I don't understand why "domestic thrillers" as bad as this one become so popular, but if thrillers are your thing and you don't care about suspending disbelief due to unrealistic storylines, you may enjoy this.

it seems a little impossible at some moments. But if you can suspend your disbelief that human fear can cause you to do things that you wouldn't ordinarily do. It's a suspenseful and spine-tingling Tale

Profile Avatar

Wow, what a book. I just finished listening and it's left me haunted. I've actually gone back and listened to certain parts again to review nuances not earlier heard and/or appreciated. It's disturbing and dark for sure, but the ending was worth the ride. It's got the same kind of vibe as "The Girl Before" which I've also read. If you like this style, I would recommend reading "The Good Girl".

OVERALL GOOD BOOK

Profile Avatar
Ashley C

Overall, I really liked this book. It was hard to put down and there were a lot of twists and turns. It was hard to believe that she was never able to escape, like some of the other reviews stated. She seemed to have many opportunities, so it wasn't always plausible. I would definitely recommend it.

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar

The book overall was pretty good but I thought it was slow in some parts and it was hard to believe that she could never find a way to escape. I loved the ending and the narration was very good.

Profile Avatar
Christa T

I didn't like where I thought they were going with the book in the beginning. The middle and end definitely made up for it. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. The ending was fantastic!

Profile Avatar

I absolutely loved this book!!! I wasn't a big fan of the ending but I understood it. I wish there was more. I left wanting more. But overall is a great book.

Profile Avatar
Doreen B

I really didn't like this book, the story line was implausible. It started off interesting enough then I thought "are you kidding me?". This women was not very suave in the escape department , it all seemed pretty lame. Me? I would have thrown a knife over his shoulder while cooking one of those perfect meals, while he was distracted, stabbed him in the heart with another knife or how about just throwing hot oil in a pan right in his "movie star looks" face! Instead she 's talking hysterically to hotel managers, policemen... the cut up note in the hairpin! Nope, it seemed unrealistic. I read/listen to escape but I couldn't escape the lame attempts at freedom. Millie was much more cool and calculated, feigning trouble sleeping to obtain and in turn save up sleeping pills. Nice! Go Millie!!!! Nope, in case it's not obvious, not a book I would recommend. "The Woman in cabin 10", good read/ listen.

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar

This was a great book. I loved the end.

Profile Avatar
Breanna J

This was hard to put down, a quick easy listen. The narrator was perfect for the character.

Profile Avatar
Mary R

Overall, I thought it was pretty good, but it wasn't my favorite. I like Gone Girl more than American Psycho. I'd probably recommend. I suppose my criticism would be that I thought it used too many (basically every single one) typical/textbook psychopathic traits to develop the psychopath (if that makes sense). Anyway, I think it was well-paced. I did like the sister; her actions and strength were a great part of the book, and I thought they gave the story more depth and character development all around. Also, the title is clever, touching on many aspects of the book. I thought the narrator matched up with the character well. For reference, some of my book preferences: Really liked -- Sharp Objects, Girl Before (JP Delaney), The Girl Before (Rena Olsen), Big Little Lies, Cross the Line Meh -- The Perfect Girl, Everything You Want Me to Be Really not so much -- The Good Girl

Profile Avatar
Kristi G

The book is suspenseful and addictive. The title is a dead giveaway about the couples less than perfect marriage. This is a book you will surely recommend to a friend. I enjoyed the narrators as well.

Profile Avatar
Admon A

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar
Victoria L

A little predictable but still a good book! Narration was great!

Profile Avatar
ASRAA R

I thought the book was pretty average. The character of Jack was made out to be more creepy than he really was. I thought it was anti-climactic that all he really wanted was to torture the sister. He went through a lot of trouble to marry one girl to torture somebody else. Just was not as creepy as it could've been. And I think the whole thing was dragged out and a little bit predictable. I think the only exciting thing was how the pills were given to Grace by her sister. That was pretty creative of her. But other than that nothing creepy or super exciting or scary happened like I expected. I mean the title told you that something is going on behind closed doors, so I expected some real big thing going on, only to find out that he keeps her captive and hopes to torture her sister one day. Yawn

Let me start with saying WOW. Going into this story I wasn't expecting anything but seeing the reviews I figured it was worth listening to. It opened slowly with the dinner Jack and Grace were hosting, so the first fifteen minutes or so wasn't particularly interesting but I kept listening. By the time the dinner was over, I just knew it was taking a delicious turn into a story that was going to have me glued. The author did an amazing job bouncing between past and present as the actions and words between Jack and Grace pieced together. Each time revealing more of the truth behind their "closed doors." The ending was perfect as well. I might need to listen to it again to pick up on anything I missed the first time.

As someone who never likes to read anything dark/disturbing, and pretty much only reads chick-lit/romantic comedy type books, I'm appalled at how much I enjoyed this book. There're definitely portions that weigh you down and mess with your mind because the suffering is more psychological than physical, however, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time, in hopes of a satisfying resolution at the end of the book (I will not tell you whether this resolution happened, as I don't want to give anything away). That said, the very end of the book, specifically, the very last part of the final conversation in the book left me with goosebumps! It was such cleverly worded, and just amazing! The narration was excellent as well!
