Performed by Maggie Gyllenhaal

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels

“A coming-of-age masterpiece. . . . Sylvia Plath has become one of the influential writers of her time.” —Boston Globe

Sylvia Plath’s masterwork—an acclaimed and enduring novel about a young woman falling into the grip of mental illness and societal pressures

Esther Greenwood is bright, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther’s breakdown with such intensity that her neurosis becomes palpably real, even rational—as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic.

I read this book many moon ago and this is my first audiobook from start to finish. The book itself is a sincere depiction of a young woman as her mind unravels. Esther Greenwood tries to make sense of herself and the world around her. The subject is timeless, yet the book has a strong sense of time and place. Maggie Gyllenhaal's narration is phenomenal. She gives an authentic voice to Esther. She injects feeling and heighten the emotional connection between the reader/listener and the narrator/author.

This was my first audio book from start to end, and it was phenomenal. Maggie does a terrific job narrating and the writing is incredibly poignant. Very sad subject matter, but the way in which she describes some of the emotions the character experiences is very relatable.

I really enjoyed the book. Sometimes I would start stop paying attention due to my own thoughts and it didn't keep my attention. The narrator did a great job expressing the emotions and talked very clearly. Would listen to her again
