Summary
Author of the National Book Award winner All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier. His birth ended his mother's life in Tennessee. Scrawny and wiry, he runs away at the age of 14. As he makes his way westward, the impoverished and illiterate youth finds trouble at every turn. Then he's recruited by Army irregulars, lured by the promise of spoils and bound for Mexico. Churning a dusty path toward destiny, he witnesses unknown horrors and suffering-and yet, as if shielded by the almighty hand of God, he survives to breathe another day. Earning McCarthy comparisons to greats like Melville and Faulkner, Blood Meridian is a masterwork of rare genius. Gifted narrator Richard Poe wields the author's prose like a man born to speak it.

A tale of American barbarism; soaked in blood and pathos. It is the journey of a boy becoming a man amongst killers, set along side the retelling of the Glanton Gang's history. A work of superb historical fiction, matching Clavell's "Shogun" not in length but in the telling. a gripping narrative start to finish

Incredible. Disturbing. A masterpiece.

Hands down one of the best books I've ever read. Really eye opening in to the level of violence that was once a part of everyday life. I am not a fan of westerns, but I will be reading this again!!

A word salad of the highest order that contributes to the feeling of slogging through the unending violent encounters as the boy journeys west. It’s exhausting. It was interesting and eye opening as to the pure violence of the times but the over abundance of language used to describe every second made my mind wander. I’m sorry, I just don’t agree that this is the masterpiece others describe. And yes, the Judge is definitely a piece of work and requires more contemplation I admit.

Beautiful language, oddly used to follow a group of psychopathic mercenary partisans through the blood-soaked war and genocide of mid 19th century American frontierland.

I thoroughly enjoyed this narrator. I thoroughly enjoyed the different perspectives. It's a brutal, gruesome story, not for the faint of heart. It uses language that is not PC so I would refrain from listening to this out loud in public spaces. The story itself has many twists that really made my jaw drop. The Judge needs a story of his own.

Disturbing. Nearly gave up but was captivated by nearly every sentence being a work of art. A way with words. A terrible tale. Great narration.

Well this one was not one of my favorites His novel The Road was my first which I did not enjoy and this was similar but much better. Two of his other novels I loved. Lot of grit and blood with little story or charter development

Even better than when I read it 15 years ago. The narration by Poe is simply extraordinary and the only touch that could make McCarthy’s voice live brighter off the written page.

Difficult book to read. Violent and bloody. Better horror than others I have read. Brilliant author with a command of the language that is impressive. The narrator was excellent handling difficult language and various voices with ease. If life was like this in the west in that century it was brutal. Our present society has become very soft in comparison. It was an interesting read. A world I can not envision being real. What it did do was erase all the petty complaints and meaningless reasons to be unhappy with my life. Compared to the intense suffering captured in this book my own seem irrelevant. It is like reverse psychology or aversion therapy.

Carnage, savagery and human loyalties intertwine in an epic journey across the very Wild West.

Very intense story. I enjoy the flowing narrative of Cormac McCarthy. Richard Poe is an excellent narrator.
