Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham takes you back to Camino Island, where bookseller Bruce Cable and novelist Mercer Mann always manage to find trouble in paradise.

Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one.

The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave. That last descendant is Lovely Jackson, elderly now, who loves her birthplace and its remarkable history. But now Tidal Breeze, a huge, ruthless corporate developer, wants to build a resort and casino on the island, which Lovely knows, deep down, is rightfully hers.

Mercer befriends Lovely, and they plunge into an enormous fight over who owns Dark Isle, taking on Tidal Breeze Corporation, its lawyers, lobbyists, and powerful Florida politicians. But Lovely knows something about the island that could seriously cloud the dollar signs in the developer’s eyes: the island is cursed. It has remained uninhabited for nearly a century for some very real and very troubling reasons. The deep secrets of the past are about to collide with the enormous ambitions of the present, and the fate of Dark Isle—and Camino Island, too—hangs in the balance.

The story was decent, but it was hard to keep track of which character was speaking. It was the same voice for everyone and hard to follow.

Great book with great narration. I loved the story and having Whoopi Goldberg as a narrator was a big bonus.

Goldberg does a good job of narration adding obvious and realistic voices for most of the characters; and Grisham is back with the little guy versus the big corporation story line. Lots of sub-plots but none that get in the way of a good story. With the debacle of trying to resurrect Abby and Mitch McDeere, at least this story was believable.

I listened for about 10 minutes and couldn’t listen anymore. Sorry but Whoop didn’t do it for me. I’m sure the book is could but I can’t comment on that.

Whoopi Goldberg an inspired choice for narration and brought Lovely Jackson to life at the center of another great Camino story centered upon another point of law...this time property ownership. The use of Lovely's book to intertwine with the narrative of the present a wonderful stroke and the listen a super way to pass the time on the drive from the Midwest to New England!

Another great book by Grisham. A legal suspense with a fiction historical feel. Whoopi did a fantastic narration.

A good story, slave narratives are an overlooked part of American history bringing it into current events make one see the relavance even more. The subjet was serious but the story added the right amount of Camino humor and charaters. Having owned a home on a small island on the coast of Florida, you can find these real life characters in every little village in the state. However, Camino seems to be lacking the right wingers that have been migrating to Florida the past 20 years.

I truly enjoyed this book. I found the story to be compelling and the characters to be interesting.. Woopies reading inflections built the characters personalities.

Great read. Thoroughly enjoyed story. One of John Grisham’s best. I would have enjoyed it so much more with a different narrator.

This was a decent novel, didn't feel like a John Grisham novel and not as exciting as most of his books, but then again I don't love the Camino series. Not a huge fan of Whoopi Goldberg as a person but she's a fantastic narrator.

Loved the book and series. Not a fan of Whoopi’s narration, really took away from the book.

Narrator was awful. Could not get past first chapter. I really enjoyed the first two books but goldberg is awful. I got my credit refunded because she was so bad. Using washed up actors is not the best way to please the book buyer.
