Summary
Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling's brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in 'one of the best books of the year' (USA Today).
After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he's living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry -- known to her friends as the Cuckoo -- famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.
Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.

Story starts slow but builds after a couple of chapters. This is an excellent story

We liked the storyline but felt it was very long and drug out. The narrator did a fantastic job.

I loved this book.

Profile Avatar Brian D. May 2023

I just felt that the book lacked speed it was a drawn out story that I did not find interesting. I wanted to hear more about the detective work versus his life story.

Profile Avatar Sandra M. May 2021

Brilliant. I didn't want to stop listening. I will listen to the rest in this series, as long as the narrator is the speaker

What a great surprise! Cormoran Stirke is a fantastic character with a great amount of back history which will make for exciting future novels. The reader did a wonderful job bringing Strike’s voice alive for the listener.

I enjoyed the book ... the characters ... the twists but would have liked it better with less offensive language. It says something for the book that I did not stop it because of the language but how many times does the F word need to be said (amongst other words I found a bit much. I hope the second one in the series uses less of the F word.

I love the Cormorán Strike series. These are smart and sophisticated mysteries with many moving parts that keep you guessing until the end. Strike's analysis of his conclusive solving of the mystery, at the end, will blow your mind. I love the subtle undertones of the relationship between Strike and Robyn, and those moments that shine through to show Strike's humanity. Lots of heart and major intelligence in this character driven literary mystery. Highly recommend.

Enjoyed this book very much! Looking forward to reading the next two in the series!

I was interested in the plot that the summary described and tried to not listen to what the reviewers had stated that this book was long. I felt like my own little private investigator!! Constantly trying to figure out the mystery with the detective! Piecing all the information and looking at each different characters personalities and their perception of other listed characters was very interesting. I highly recommend this book! The narrator also does a great job depicting the characters.

I absolutely love this book. It keeps you guessing all the way through to the end, and the characters are so well written.

Profile Avatar Babbie Jaco Nov 2016

The narration was excellent but the storyline was slow. I felt bored throughout most of the book and contemplated putting it aside several times.

Profile Avatar Gabrielle Lyons Oct 2016

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator was fabulous, easy to listen to, great dictation, tone, over all great story teller. The book itself is now one of my favorites. I've been recommending it to anyone that's into readying. It has great twists and turns, and keeps you guessing the entire time, also great foreshadowing. I really loved it. I tore through this series and hope there is more to come!

Profile Avatar Michelle Joyner Oct 2016

I loved the narrator and the story. It never got boring and had great rhythm to the story. I hope there are more.

Profile Avatar Rebecca Brock Oct 2016

Very good story and well written. The main character could carry a series of stories.

Profile Avatar Soraya Assis Sep 2016

Slow in the beginning but builds up into an easy and addictive read. Narrator quickly became quite enjoyable.

Story was pretty good, main character is likable. Narrator was great!

I recently completed the audiobook for Cuckoo's Calling and I have to say this audiobook was FANTASTIC!! The narrator nails his performance. I like to listen along while I have the actual book in hand and his inflections throughout the narration made my read 10x better. The book and audio matched up word for word, and the audio never missed a prologue, footnote, preface etc (which there were many in the text.) I plan on purchasing the remaining two audiobooks in the series in order to compliment my books. Not to mention, the setup of the app made it easy to pause or go back if I fell asleep while reading in bed at night. The audio was clear and the narrator was incredible!! Highly recommend!!! -Kevin Barry

Great story. A little slow and dragged out at times but very interesting and intriguing

Profile Avatar Kathy Keil-Rogers Jul 2016

Excellent writing and story...as expected this book keeps you in suspense as you work along side the main characters to figure out the plot behind the crime. Narrator was a real pro and made the book all that more interesting. Really enjoyed everything about this novel.

Profile Avatar Robin Steuernagel Jun 2016

It was a pretty captivating book. I loved the narrator, he really got into the different characters. The book itself wasn't the "best" I've ever "read" but it was definitely entertaining. Easy to listen to while doing multiple things.

Profile Avatar Donna Vaughan Mar 2016

I am new to audiobooks and have been so impressed by the narration. It gets me into the story so quickly and the different voices taken for the various characters shows such talent and adeptness. The story itself is engaging as well. Although I do wish the clues Strake picked up on to deduce the Mr and Mrs P scenario had been described to the readers at the time Strake picked up on it (more than just saying to Robin to look at the newspaper photo) instead of during the Mr P confrontation. Part of the fun of mysteries is to see if we (the readers) can figure things out along the way as the characters do. Overall I enjoyed the book and am getting ready to listen to the next one in the series.

Really enjoyed this book, the plot, and how details were slowly rolled out. However, really detest that he/she felt it necessary to use so MUCH foul language. Would have give 4 stars otherwise. Will look for more from Galbraith.
