Unabridged Audiobook
I was slightly put off at first that a man was narrating an Anne McCaffrey book, but he actually did a great job bringing the characters' voices to life. As always, Anne's book was fabulous and has me hooked on the series now.
I tried this audiobook after having been disappointed by an abridged recording of the same tale by a narrator who seemed to fly through the reading with no regard for dramatic impact. I was not sure about the narrator at first. but shortly into the tale his voice became soothing and expected. The only complaint I have are some of the choices of accent for less prominent characters who would go on to be more prominent in later entries of the series, but one person voicing a cast of characters as wide and deep as Pern boasts can only do so much. Anne McCaffrey's writing, of course, rarely disappoints.
great fantasy book , I can't believe it was written in 1968 !
Story is engaging, writing is solid and good. Quality of the recording left a little to be desired. I could hear background voices on some of the tracks that was distracting.
I cannot fathom the thought process of those who do not like Dick Hill's narration. All I needed to do was hear him give Robinton's speech about the wolves at the heights and I found him to be definitive gold. This story holds up as the bedrock by which Pern stands. For me, it is a classic in every single way. I'm glad to revisit this story every few months. If this is your first time entering Pern, I know you will be in for a once in a lifetime journey. If you're coming back, I hope you feel all that I feel.
I love this series of books! If dragons were in assistance on this world I imagine this would be a realistic scenario they might exist. in.
Read this series years ago. Really liked it so thought I would listen this time around. Not sure the difference but just couldn’t get into it. Dick hill narrator spoke just a little to fast even though on 1x speed. Didn’t catch a hint of Reacher in any of the characters.
