Summary
This is an eyewitness—and eye-opening—account of some of the most savage and brutal fighting in the war against Japan, told from the perspective of a young Texan who volunteered for the Marine Corps to escape a life as a traveling salesman. R. V. Burgin enlisted at the age of twenty and, with his sharp intelligence and earnest work ethic, climbed the ranks from a green private to a seasoned sergeant. Along the way, he shouldered a rifle as a member of a mortar squad. He saw friends die and enemies killed. He saw scenes he wanted to forget but never did—from enemy snipers who tied themselves to branches in the highest trees, to ambushes along narrow jungle trails, to the abandoned corpses of hara kiri victims, to the final howling banzai attacks as the Japanese embraced their inevitable defeat.

An unforgettable narrative of a young Marine in combat, Islands of the Damned brings to life the hell that was the Pacific War.

A pretty good book about some true hero’s. Very similar to “With The Old Breed” but not as good.

Once a Jap always a Jap , speaking of the Japanese soldier, If they wanted to die for the emperor I would help as many along as possible. Marine to the end.

Great story of some true American Heroes. Wish more of our younger generations would listen to this and other books like it.

Excellent book on the bitter island hopping fighting in the Pacific during WWII. One Marine's story of fighting, staying alive, then going on to marry the girl he met, married, and started a family with. Great wartime story that made me tear up and smile by the end.

This was a great story I will recommend to friends and family, hell, strangers too. This man went through hell with his brothers and made it out alive. You can find true love even under the most dire circumstances.

Appreciated the first person account of this time in history. Like me, you have probably never heard of some of these places. An interesting listen and good narration.

Really enjoyed this book. Very well written and the narrator was excellent. Really gives you a peek at life in battle as a Marine. What they endured for us to have our freedom truly makes them remakableb men. I could not go through what they did. Really brilliant book.
