Summary
Mary Elizabeth Braddon's first novel, Lady Audley's Secret, was one of the most popular English novels of its day. Published serially in 1862, it tells the story of the lovely Lucy Graham, who becomes Lady Audley at the beginning of the novel, and who conceals a scandalous secret from her new husband and his family. The plot, which includes madness, bigamy, attempted murder, and seduction, made this a shocking but highly successful story for Victorian audiences. It remains one of the best examples of 19th century sensational fiction, and is a wonderfully absorbing book. (Summary written by gloriana).

The reiteration of promotion of the title and book provider at every chapter beginning really killed the mood

I usually listen to audiobooks while I walk or do mundane chores. "Lady Audley's Secret" was so fascinating that I couldn't stop listening, and I manufactured chores so I could keep on. It was predictable in parts, but well-written, and I never knew if my predictions would really come to pass-it had many twists and turns. As most novels of its time, it is wordy, but those in the "leisure classes" didn't have anything else to do. The narrator gives different intonations to her voice for various characters without being overly dramatic. It's a good book to listen to.

It is a great story altho wordy. The era it was written in makes the language different but I liked it.

Good narration, interesting story of an era which can be tedious in its endless description of the lady’s appearance but interesting in other ways. Worth a listen if you have time to spare!

I really enjoyed this book, it had a good storyline with plenty of characters and events. I particularly liked the narration being done by one person throughout. The story was beautifully read with a lovely expressive tone of voice. The style in which the book is written has a charm about it which is lacking in many contemporary novels. I am sure it won’t be too long before I return to this wonderful story.

This novel really surprised me. It had tension, the story builds so beautifully and as the reader you are taken by hand to the conclusion. It offers an excellent story, set back in the 19C yet feels very modern. The narrator captures the characters with her ‘genteel’ voice and it allows the reader to be transported back in time and feel as though you are actually there. It is a spy glass I to a different time and that enlightens the story too. I really enjoyed it when I was not sure if I would!

Fantastically developed Victorian "noir"; Braddon feels like the literary ancestor of Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, My Cousin Rachel). I loved how insightful her psychological descriptions are of her characters; and the plot thickens nicely, hanging on to mystery, all the way to its conclusion. I toyed with giving the narrator 4 stars since her pronunciation of Byron's Don Juan as "don joo-an" seems an almost impossible error to accept from an educated reader but she is otherwise so crisp and clean, ladylike and delightfully dramatic that I must recommend her as a perfect voice for this novel. This is good fun!!
