Unabridged Audiobook
Overall the story was a crime thriller/mystery, which can twist and turn in sometimes expected and sometimes unexpected ways. The characters have flesh, each one getting their due well enough to be able to sympathize with them and their aims. There are strange semi-supernatural themes that arise, but the author keeps them well grounded and as a sort of interesting hopefulness in the very dark world the main character is forced to inhabit in order to find his twin sister. The author is surprisingly skilled with language, and he builds a moody, gritty world where no one is quite able to be what anyone else needs them to be. They all revolve around tragedy, and you get the sense that if it wasn't this particular one, they would find another just the same. It's this dark tendency that informs them and compels them each to leap at the worst possible explanation of what's happened to the girl, which drags them through more pain than was ever necessary. Good and bad things come of all this, but I found the story one worth the telling and worth the listening. The author had something to say beyond just entertainment, and he says it very well. The narrator was exceptional for the most part, but the way he perfectly annunciatiates words like 'the' (he almost exclusively says it like 'thee') and 'a', can be a little grating, but you get used to it. All-in-all a welcome surprise and I'll be reading or listening to more by John Hart.
