Unabridged Audiobook
I’ve wanted to read the Mabinogion ever since I was a kid in love with Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series. My one attempt at reading an earlier English translation decades ago was too tough a slog... I gave up and never experienced the fun of medieval storytelling, nor understood how these old stories inspired so much fantasy fiction including the works of Tolkien. This newer translation and especially getting to listen to it — the way the stories within the Mabinogion were meant to be experienced — instead of reading it has made all the difference. The tales are action-packed and the characters are memorable; the repetition and refrains make so much sense as oral storytelling devices. I loved the early Arthurian adventures, especially the story of Geraint and Enid. I enjoyed the narrator’s style — and appreciated his effortless translation of Welsh names. I can finally knock the Mabinogion off my reading wishlist and it feels great!!
