Unabridged Audiobook
A good listen but there is a sense of loss of Joi de vivre in Spike's narration at times. It seems as if he misses the earlier days when he had youth and the companionship of his soldier days. Civilian life never quite matched those heady wartime years.
Very sad to hear Milligan in such obvious decline. Age renders his diction unintelligible at times and his tendency to laugh at his own jokes (always one of his more irritating traits) is deeply off putting. I grew up reading the first three volumes of the war memoirs - they are brilliantly funny and occasionally very moving. Unfortunately the series was extended too far, the jokes became weaker and Milligan’s sentimental streak is too much in evidence. I recommend that you stick to reading the original trilogy - a reminder of the comic genius and genuine wit of Spike Milligan.
