Summary
“A high-tech vampire epic....Terrifying.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Part The Andromeda Strain, part Night of the Living Dead.”
—Salon.com

“Chuck Hogan is known for his taut thrillers, Guillermo del Toro for his surreal horror films…The Strain brings out the best of each.”
—Minneapolis Star Tribune

An epic battle for survival begins between man and vampire in The Strain—the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy from one of Hollywood’s most inventive storytellers and a critically acclaimed thriller writer. Guillermo del Toro, the genius director of the Academy Award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, and Hammett Award-winning author Chuck Hogan have joined forces to boldly reinvent the vampire novel. Brilliant, blood-chilling, and unputdownable, The Strain is a nightmare of the first order.

I actually thought the Narration was good. Very fitting of Guillermo Del Toro's general style.

If I had not already read more than half of this book on my own, I would never of made it even half way with the narration on this book. WOW.... rough and trans-inducing voice! lol. This book is a bit repretetive. It can be a thriller in some parts but its just not enough. And I had high expectations since Guillermo Del Toro co-wrote this. It started off very good, then it just dragged on and on.

This is the penultimate vampire story! A fresh, new twist on a centuries old monster. This is part one of a trilogy, and it just keeps getting more intense. Of course, since Ron Pearlman is a fantastic actor, he does an amazing job telling the story and breathing life into the characters.

Great book --not a great narrator though! Perlman is a wonderful actor, but he is not a voice actor. BIG difference!

Fantastic narrative, great use of mixing a biologic epidemic with vampire lore. Characters jump off the page. You can't beat a veteran actor, such as Perlman, when choosing a narrator. Great listen, give it a shot.

Great twist on the vampire story, and Ron Perlman does a fantastic job narrating. The Strain will be waiting to see if the bookclub adds the next two books in the series to their offerings...

80% done with this book and I am already and dreading the moment when I am left hanging at the end, as this is the first of three, you know it's going to happen. I only hope that book two is out soon or I will be left waiting again as I was with the Odd Thomas series by Koontz. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good fiction with a modern twist on old vampire lore. Very good reader, easy to listen to.

One of the best vampire books I've listened to. I can't wait for book 2. Hurry Guillermo!

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan team up to write this dark story of a mysterious virus sweeping through NYC. A cross between "The Andromeda Strain" and "Salem's Lot" it has great characters, a semi-plausible premise, and a pace that keeps you interested from start to finish. Ron Perlman's voice is easy to listen to and lends itself to the dark nature of the story. Can't wait for the next installment.
