Summary
1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London’s most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better …
—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1814

But this time the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry—he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams …

Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands—and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate’s determined to protect her sister—but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony’s lips touch hers, she’s suddenly afraid she might
not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself …

I really am surprised and enthralled when an author writes a compassionate tale that includes a caring stepmother! They seem to be evil in most books! Thank you for writing about a stepmother who cares!

Too long. Rosalyn Landor is good as always. This book needs a good edit. Some scenes are never ending, repetitive thoughts and actions that don’t advance the story. I almost always like Julia Quinn stories but never love them. I wish I did.

This was another good story by Quinn. It was fun and light and, for the most part, kept great pace. Occasionally, I found the pall mall game scenes a bit long.

Nice story, amazingly adorable humor (loved the 2nd epilog as much as theain book) but noticing a theme ... emotional trauma to build in a psychological barrier to happiness as the single flaw for otherwise perfect characters...

This book, or rather the entire series (I’ve decided to stop at the second for moral reasons) is like a toxic relationship. You think it feels good, but the entire time you feel kind of iffy and insecure and you can’t clearly put your finger on what’s wrong, but baby, it’s wrong. The writing is well done. In the sense that the author knows how to write proper, pretty sentences. And string scenes together. But the sexism, the power plays, the psychological yuckiness of it all…ugh. I would never ever want any young woman to listen to this stuff. The author clearly has no experience in what wholesome relationships are and how people should treat each other. She propagates a toxic culture and is obsessed with demonstrating the differences between men and women. I watched the television series and was blown away by the work they put in eliminating so many terrible things she wrote or did not write. I’m proud to think that there are people out there who recognize that we are not bound by past trash, and can simply use it as inspiration. The narration is of good quality, but doesn’t pull at my heart strings. No critiques otherwise.

After reading “The Duke and I”, I was looking forward to this book. However I am really disappointed. I find it to be extremely annoying and hard to listen to.

The second book was almost as good as the first. This series is so much better than the show. The Viscount and Kate’s story is wonderful. I didn’t expect Antony to get married just to spite his mother. I was quite surprised when Kate entered the picture. I was surprised at the dimensions of Antony. His character seemed very vain and unsettled in the first book.

Very elegant and emotional. Not at all what I expected. Love his background.

The first part of the story is sort of misogynistic and Anthony is displayed as an asshole. Even if the author wants to show character development, his character is still disturbing and disrespectful. The narrator is 5 out of 5 stars

I’m pleased that I’m listening to this without the benefit of seeing the Netflix adaptation, because many Regency puritans are denying the authenticity of the tale and the genre because of the aforementioned adaptation. However this is as enjoyable as any other in the genre. The story is fluid and the characters are believable. There’s no aspect of incredulity and I like that the plot is highlighted by the addition of the Gossip Columnist’s observations. That adds another twist to the tale - Who Is the author of the Gossip Newspaper?

Another fun follow up in this series, that did not disappoint. Although the main gentleman comes across as a bit belligerent at the beginning, he softens as the story goes on. Characters are well drawn and packed with humour and moments of pathos. Easy weekend listen.
