A Today Show #ReadwithJenna Book Club Pick

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

I am just spit-balling here, but I think this should come with a trigger warning As this book deals with some pretty heavy topics. Albeit in a phenomenally humorous way, it still deals with mental health, severe mental health and the under insured. It also touches on fertility issues. It deals with a cheating spouse, a widow and child. The book itself is wonderfully written, the narrator was a little flat at times and I almost didn't finish the book. The story line got better and there were times where the narrator seemed to actually believe in what she was reading and not just reading words from a page as if she was reading a chart of numbers. The writer takes you a long through a journey of one woman's struggles to find herself after the dissolution of her marriage. The story could be anyone, your best friend, your sister, your mother, your aunt or maybe even you. There's enough humor thrown in to keep it real, but, I heard myself in her monologue at times. So I give the book 5 stars but the narrator I gave 4. I would have given 3.5 if that was an option.

I really enjoyed this book and how each and every character came to life. The narrator did a superb job of giving each character so different yet you couldn’t help but enjoy the personalities. I difficult and triggering topic for some, it was more about the unique characters and their impacts on one another’s lives. Serious topic yet a light and funny wonderful read.
