Unabridged Audiobook
As a great lover of DH Lawrence’s novels, I found this, his first novel, very endearing for many different reasons. The characterisation takes place via the characters’s conversations, While the pace of the novel is rather slow, the descriptions of nature are very beautiful and vivid. The relationships between the two couple, which end up very unhappily, clearly illustrate the lack of communication that Lawrence wants to address. As in many other of his novels he describes the way people relate to each other, the complexities of love, social class and education. The excessive consumption of alcohol also plays an important part in this and order of his novels. He is critical of the society he lived in. I found the reader could have read slower taking more time and thus adding more feeling to the narrative. There was a fundamental lack of passion in his voice which made the characters appeared cold and insensitive. That is my only criticism.
