Tamara J. Walker is a historian and associate professor of Africana Studies at Barnard College of Columbia University, where her research and a teaching focus on the history of slavery and freedom in Latin America. Her first book, Exquisite Slaves: Race, Clothing and Status in Colonial Lima, won the Harriet Tubman Prize awarded by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Her writing has appeared in Columbia Global Reports, The Guardian, Slate, and The Root.
